When you activate this new phone purchase, there is an option to choose either port in a new number, or activate this phone for an existing number already serviced by TracFone. For the latter option, it disables my old SIM card and enables the number to run on this new phone + sim card combo, and adds an one whole year of service expiration date (e.g. from end of 2027 to end of 2028), in addition to the available credit units (minutes, SMS counts, data). And since I started to use this phone in early 2026, it will automatically unlock in early 2027.

Never swap sim from another phone. TracFone is very anal about attaching a SIM card to the phone it came in. You could lose service one day bc they consider SIM swap against their terms. To change phones, you need to activate a nEW BYOP SIM..

thanks, found it

Notwithstanding your Service End Date, Tracfone reserves the right to deactivate any phone for which there is no voice, text or data usage for a period of six (6) consecutive months for smartphones and twelve (12) consecutive months for other phones.

I use Google Voice almost all the time so I have to remind myself to show some activity on my "spares" but lately they've been sending reminder emails wanting me to use them more often. Not sure what's going on - hope you get reactivated, I'd be PO'd to lose 2 of my numbers.

70 minutes into my chat and they say they've reactivated my line. much dispute on how long my service was paid up for, but its a small victory at least!

Glad you got it fixed but it never should have happened. Guess we need to start looking elsewhere for more reliable service.

just got off chat. actually able to convince them that i had service for another year and they did update the system so i'm fully whole again.

i shared the terms and conditions but they were unfazed. they said:
"We've observed that the system will deactivate the phone if there's no usage for a month."

they did say that they can reactivate the line if its done within 60 days of being inactivated.
again, for my usage, i expect that this will be a problem at some point.

Same for me. I don't make a lot of calls or texts and as long as I've paid for service it shouldn't matter. It's why I've stayed with TF, unlimited service is just a waste of $ for me. This isn't good news.

I've found that it helps to sign my lines up for some text-based reminder system. As an example (but also trying to remain apolitical), I used the White House's text alert number to generate periodic text traffic to my spare numbers.Of course, please replace my example with whatever text-based update service you recommend.

when my tracfone service ends, i'll probably go with the infimobile 500MB plan for my back up phones. hope it stays around that $30/year, not much more expensive than tracfone and much more usable

Google Voice in specific, and most other providers requiring regular usage, only count outgoing texts and calls as required usage. Signing up to receive texts regularly won't help.

Not sure what they were doing. I just logged into my Tracfone account and went to "Activate". I selected the "New phone purchased from Tracfone" option and entered the IMEI information for the new phone. I didn't need to talk to customer service at all.
I had tracfone service several years ago...for a month or two. Does that account still exist or once the line was either ported out or not renewed, the account gets closed? So when I get this phone, I will have to signup as a new customer (would same email work?)? Thanks

I was able to login into my old account. I can't edit some of the info. Do I just click activate when I get the phone and go through the process? Thanks

I added this to the previous thread, but if you're only interested in service, these phones have good trade-in value. Amazon itself will trade back the phone for $30 and I had an EcoATM quote for $20.
Trade-In rejected, on the way to return to me.
