I did one like this several years ago. Verizon confirmed the cancellation and then sent me to collections for $80. Was still on my credit report this year, although I was told I won the dispute and it was removed. I won't be doing it again.

Yes. I have a spare last time these were on sale cheap. No sim card, just wifi calling with google voice. My google voice is connected to this and my other main phone, so it's like having a second phone with free wifi calling I can leave in my shop without having to remember to bring it back in the house.

Can't you just disable it from the apps screen (show system apps).
I had to disable Glance to prevent the wake up on raise. Disabling that setting didn't stop it from waking up until I disabled Glance.

Before purchasing a Motorola phone research the glance app that comes pre installed. I just purchased 3 moto phones and I had to switch them all to Samsung because the glance app interferes with the medical app I need. Literally a potentially life or death situation and Motorola will not do anything to help.
Go to Settings>Apps>All Apps> three dots>Show system Apps. find Glance and Disable it.

do we need to provide the social while setting up the account? Is it a new setup process or been like this earlier?

Usually new lines requires it, any large carrier (non prepaid ones)

When I picked up from Best Buy, I was not asked to choose a plan or anything. Do I still need to contact Verizon and create an account and then cancel it?

The abomination that is the Glance app. Can't normally uninstall through phone settings/ manage apps or disable (it's keeps re-enabling itself). I found a reddit post that said to uninstall you:
1) phone settings/manage apps/force stop, 2) then disable, 3) go to Google Play > Manage Apps > Select the Glance app and there should be an uninstall option that should actually work.
Worked for me on a 2025 Motorola Moto G...

do you chat with Verizon CS or Bestbuy CS to cancel the service?
Bestbuy has nothing to do with the line cancellation. For the new line, its the Verizon customer care who will help.

I'm never going to buy a locked phone again. It would not be worth $100 discounyt if it is locked to either Verizon or Att. One reason I like unlocked is if you travel you can put a cheap data only esim in the phone.

Yes it's an unlocked phone. The listing and OP clearly states that. But still a lot of people put comments (I guess without reading the OP or the actual product page) with assumptions that it's a locked device.

No idea where the confusion is, but this phone is an unlocked device and NOT locked or linked to Verizon/ATT in anyway. The device can be used as any other unlocked device from day1. This is just a bundled offer where on gets $100 off the phone's price with a new line activated. Please refer to instructions in OP.
There is no question of using it as wifi device or anything - unless I am missing anything here.
