If you wait and keep an eye on Costco, they tend to have this at 250-300 new on clearance

Also, the "kit" helps but it's actually not really the problem. The problem is the blue cage fan that pushes the air, it's an absolute mold trap regardless. I cleaned two of them and it's horrible tedious work. It's not worth the hassle, as great as they are otherwise.
I purchased several replacement fans so I can remove and clean at my own leisure. Alcohol and a brush did well, but I won't call it fun work. The savings in electricity and the quietness are worth it in my opinion. Also the fix was just what was stated above, a dude came and drilled a hole at the back and put in a plug that let's the water escape. My old smaller lg units I drilled a hole myself to achieve the same results.

I use a battery powered hand-held pressure washer, it's a 5 minute job. A Water-Pik also works great, though quite a bit slower.
Uhhh 5 minutes??? Are you not dissembling it?? That alone takes 15 minutes. It's a pita

You probably think you cleaned it, but you didn't. I blasted it first time with a hose, and it looked better, but rub a q-tip along it and it comes up black. The semi translucent blue really hides it. It took going through each section of the fan with alcohol and a q tip to stop it coming up black.

Or maybe you don't live somewhere humid and it really was fine, I dunno. I'm just saying, my experience is absolutely not abnormal and the youtube comments attest to that.

This was my first smart appliance and I love the app, very easy to use, and with Alexa. Been going on for 3 years and for the mold I make sure I have an air filter machine and wipe every couple of weeks but no issues whatsoever. Last year ran almost 3 months straight during the summer and still have a chill today.

Midea 8000 btu unit died 13 months after purchase. Error code even their support couldn't decipher. Company was no help, and I dispatched it to the trash before the recall so I was SOL. I'll stick to quality brands like Frederich going forward.
You were well within the 24 month warranty, why didn't they replace the unit?

If it's like my experience with Midea support, they ask for photos/receipts or whatever to an email address, never respond, and when you call again it's like your original complaint evaporated and you need to start over I did that dance three times. I ended up getting reimbursed by AMEX.

I had the 8K and 12K version of the older style without the drain plug, lived in a fairly humid area at the time (San Antonio), and never experienced the mold problem. I did shove a folded paper towel into it to wick some of the excess moisture out. Maybe that's all it needed. Anyway, they were great units. If I need a new window AC unit, I'm gonna get another one.

I want to mention I got the smaller version of this unit about a week ago, and they forgot to include the pins that hold the supporting mount in place, as well as a couple brackets that hold the AC to that supporting mount so it won't slip. Now I'm stuck having to find the time to lug the thing to the nearest Walmart for a return.
Just an FYI. I'm sure I just got unlucky, but definitely follow the instructions to make sure they didn't forget to include something.

Can you just blast the fan while it's still mounted without take it out and disassembling?
You could, but it isn't going to do very much. It's hard to explain without seeing it, but the fan is a long tube with hundreds of curved bits that overlap each other. You have to get into those hard to reach bits somehow.

I suspect that person isn't even talking about the same thing, because as somebody else on here noted, just gaining access to the fan is a 20 minute job, more like 60 if it's your first time.

You guys are making this a whole lot harder than it needs to be. I take care of 6-7 of these units for myself and family. I live in SW Florida, so I know all about humidity, too. I have ALWAYS drilled a drainage hole in every window unit I have ever owned. Standing water is not something you want (or need). The negligible energy savings is way offset by negative effects from not draining that water out of the unit.

These U-Shaped units are pretty much used year-round around here. I have to clean them about every 6 months. All I use is the portable pressure washer gun and some disinfecting/cleaning spray. Usually Spray-Nine, or some foaming evaporator cleaner. The only thing I take apart is the wire grate and the deflector vanes. The wire grate goes in the trash with the first cleaning. Removing the fins/vanes is not totally necessary, but it does make things much easier. I would never even consider taking out the blower wheel. I did it once, and that was enough for me.

I spray the wheel down with cleaner while rotating it slowly with a wooden skewer until it is fully covered. Then I wait a couple of minutes to let it do it's thing to loosen up the filth. Then while holding the wheel steady, I use the pressure sprayer to blast all that crap off the wheel and let it run down the back of the evaporator. Unless its really bad, you don't even really need the cleaner. It's mainly to help kill the odors and provides some residual protection. I do spray the wheel again with the cleaning agent after blasting the crud (for the same reason).

The whole process can be completed while the unit is in the window if you put down a plastic bin and some towels to catch the over spray. You do need a large hole on the back of the unit to let the water drain out. You can use the same method to clean the evaporator and the condenser too. You can finish the complete system cleaning in less than 30 minutes!

I use a Fanttick pressure washer I got from Costco for $35 on clearance. It's really the only job that this thing does well! They're long gone from Costco, but you can still find them. I recently started using another unit from Amazon that works even better. In a pinch, you could use a Water-Pik type device, but it will take much longer. A $10 unit from Amazon will get the job done eventually.

Port A Blaster HVAC Coil Cleaning [amazon.com]

Some Pictures of the results. Sorry there are no before pics of blower. I can assure you they were stomach-turning though! I've seen it so bad you can hardly tell its supposed to be blue!

I should really do a YouTube video showing the process. So many people are struggling needlessly in trying to clean these things!

What about just using those AC drain pan tablets every month to keep it clean?

That will help with slime in the cabinet, but it's not going to help with the fan. The fan and evaporator are the parts you need to keep clean from a mold perspective.
