About this title:
  • Controversial animator Ralph Bakshi's literal adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic fantasy trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, is brought to the screen. An evil sorcerer from a previous era created a magical ring which enables its users to call upon its tremendous powers to rule the world, but it inevitably warps them to evil. It was believed lost, but during a resurgence of magical evil in the world, Bilbo, a simple, plain-spoken hobbit, recovers it from its hiding place. The forces of good give his nephew Frodo the choice to bear the awful burden of the ring to a place where it may be destroyed.

What makes this deluxe? Is this the core film or all three movies?

  • 1978 The Hobbit - Cartoonish animation, 1:17 in length (I'm now watching it and somehow drawn into the story. None other than John Huston lends his voice for Gandalf The Grey)
  • 1979 The Lord of the Rings - Filmed live action, then animated. This makes it more polished than the other movies. Most of the battles feature live-action superimposed on animated backdrops, which accounted for the trippy look, 2:13 in length, with a story narration at the end. I heard this was done for budget reasons.
  • 1980 The Return of the King - Return to cartoonish animation. It is about 1:37 long and finishes the incomplete 1979 movie.
$5 is cheap, but I don't know what is included.

Amazon sells the Blu-ray version for $32 and has a rather descriptive four-star review. Any of the three animated versions is rather primitive compared to the animations we are spoiled with today. For me, the shorter animated versions are easier to understand. The visualizations by Peter Jackson are wonderful to view.

It goes on sale fairly frequently for $5. It's only the 1979 movie.

I haven't noticed the hobbit on sale , I have a price watch set I already have an older copy of the hobbit , but I'll eventually buy the newer art cover if it goes below $10

it's kind of a weird situation, these three get packaged as a trilogy sometimes, but they're not really. The Hobbit was a Rankin Bass tv special. The Ralph Bakshi Lord of the Rings was a completely unrelated production that was supposed to be the start of a trilogy, but it was a flop and the sequels never got made. Rankin Bass decided to make a sequel to The Hobbit, but they couldn't cover all of Lord of the Rings in one tv movie, so they made the weird decision to just skip straight to Return of the King. At some point years later, the same company ended up owning all three movies, so they released them on DVD as a trilogy even though they don't flow from one to another and the animation style changes every movie.
