Do yourself a favor and get a Nisaku that goes on sale for $10 periodically. It's a beast. The Martha Stewart looks like the black and Decker one I have which works better than a trowel but not much. The Nisaku is sharp and has a thick sturdy blade. Plus the polished metal cleans up WAY easier. Been using it two seasons and it looks almost new. Easily my favorite tool for working in the garden.

Good product. But fyi...these were $1.78 a piece in mid November. Obviously more use of these now than in November...

Agree on the blade quality. One drawback on the Nisaku is the handle. I wished the handle was more ergonomic. When you are working with wet soil and need to dig to plant a pallet of plants, your hands begin to feel it. I use Fiskars 315530-1001 Xact Trowel with Nisaku NJP650. I have a slope that is rocky with hard soil. When I move next time, I'm going to inquire about a location with good soil for planting. 😅

I was thinking manufactures intentionally put a weaker handle so that the tool can not be used with full hand-arm strength.

Next time if WorkPro has a deal, I will try theirs as they appear to have the most ergonomic handle.

I orefer to japanese digging knife, size feels more appropriat3 handle is more ergonomic and safer, i feel like it wont warp if left in the rain. Use in place of a spade or trowel mostly.

For more serious weeding i use a hula hoe or a nisaku triangle hoe.

The safety and shit ergonomics of the standard japanese digging knife make it a danger imho

Agreed. I have Nisaku NJP800 model - which has much more comfortable plastic handle. I have been using it constantly on my clay soil for 10 years and it is still super sharp and looks shining like new. The Japanese steel is unbeatable. Once I left it outside for 2 weeks and nothing happened to it after all the rain. https://www.amazon.com/Nisaku-NJP...01MRF99O6/ The regular price is $20. But if you have an Amazon business account, it is on sale right now for only $10.

If you have the one with wooden handle, try to wrap it with tennis racket wrap tape to make it more comfortable to hold

if you do a Amazon search for hori hori or garden knife you can find much better examples for not too much more. The problem with this one is the tang is short and if you pry a root it can and will bend In the handle. Get one with a full tang. The cheap ones with the wood handles can be sanded more round to be less sharp edged and more comfortable in the hand. The fiskers is ok but the metal handle end is hard in the palm.
I use them for digging plugs metal detecting.

My favorite was the Barebones. Now you can get several copies for less that look just like the original Barebones hori hori.
You can take this for $11 and sand oil the handle and its very usable.

At $3.99 with free Amazon shipping these are a great deal. A must have if you garden. In for 3. Thanks OP! (I actually have one of these that I bought last year and they are tough compared to the more expensive Hori knives with wood handles sold on Amazon)

FOLLOW UP: I rcvd my three and two of them were pitted and rusty. The handles were smudged like they had been used. Can I post pictures here? Anyway I reached out to WOOT Customer Service asking for a refund or replacements. Very disappointed as these were going to be part of gifts.

Pretty much matches the reviews

Mine arrived OK other than the hanger part of the backer board torn off. Definitely old shelf stock.

Can be worse, the fiskars just breaks in half looking at the listing, will have to see if this does better.
