Change in frame of reference: why is a smartwatch that stops working in 5-10 years as expensive as this?

This will likely work for several years without need for recharging, it only requires a day or two worth of sunlight for a very few months. It doesn't require updates or an internet connection and keeps accurate time within a couple seconds a day. It also looks a hell of a lot better than a smart watch if you know how to dress.

Good luck getting a lasting charge out of a daily worn smartwatch after 3 years.

Those Arabic markers are going to be a tough sell with what's going on in the world right now.

That also applies to a $5 calculator, well, maybe not the last part. I think the question still stands, why so expensive?

It has a motherboard, rechargeable battery, various sensors for different features, a LCD or LED touchscreen, bluetooth/wifi/5g network

This is kind of on low to mid range as watches go, but it's a pretty nice watch for a good price.

that stops getting an update in 5 yrs (if apple, less if wearOS)..... and you have to charge it daily.

What does how many years of updates or how many times you have to charge have to do with how expensive the device is? I'm talking about what makes the device expensive.

Thank you for being courteous.
1. My argument is about the usable span of a watch (updates/battery charge). After a certain point, a smartwatch may only be useful as a watch. It will invariably be heavier than a regular watch at this point. You are only willing to put up with the extra weight because it does other things today. And you'd still need to charge it daily to just tell time.
2. A smartwatch in this range typically doesn't receive updates (Apple Series 3 or first gen SE etc). A Garmin might last you a while but it's not your typical smartwatch.
3. A 'smart' watch in this budget that lasts you a while (updates) is going to be along the lines of a Fitbit.
#2 and #3 are cheaper to make the equivalent EcoDrive.
Updates/having the ability to even do a factory reset are important in a smartwatch.
It's really upto you. It depends on cloud services/paired device to even tell time. One will work the same as the day you started using it even after decades. The other will not. I wear a cheap Casio since I don't want the distractions.
Not making my decisions based on cost/price alone.
