Sounds like you've been living under a rock. AI has skyrocketed prices of storage and RAM.

Would this be a good option for getting a Plex server started for Ripping Blu-rays (standard and 4K)?

Seems like the 4TB would be enough, but maybe there are better device and size options i should be looking at.
No, IMO.

4TB would fill up quickly. Especially for 4K.
I suppose if you only have a small library of discs. Also, if you are then processing the files to make them smaller that would help too.

thanks, did a cursory search which indicated 4TB would be the minimum but wanted to get some other feedback.

Assuming a Blu-ray is using full storage, a 4 tb drive would hold 80 uncompressed Blu-ray Discs..4K can be 66 or 100 gb, so if they are triple layer discs a 4 TB drive would only hold 40 uncompressed disc images.Of course most movies don't use all available space and if you remove foreign sound tracks, bonus features, etc. you can stretch a 4 TB drive to be able to hold 200+ movies

Depends on how many you're ripping. If you're reencoding your 1080p rips you can get a significant amount of space back. I've got 2500 movies ripped from my blus with 250 of them 4k rips (I don't reencode 4k rips) and I've filled 45tb of space. 4k movies take anywhere from 50gb to a bit over 100gb each.

If you don't re-encode 4K rips, do you re-encode 1080p rips? and Why?

I bought a 4tb internal 3.5 new for $100 just during the holidays.. Now they go for $130 and up.. Spinning hard drives are making a comeback due to the silicon shortage..

Seagate stock is way up..

I reencode 1080p rips as I'm not losing a ton of visual data on them and don't notice much difference when they are upscaled on my Nvidia Shields on 4k tvs. I don't reencode 4k rips as I like to keep the HDR data untouched. There's ways to reencode but I haven't been too impressed with how it makes the HDR look afterwards and it takes forever when you're working with a large file and the amount of space I'm saving isn't worth it to me.

These are shuckable so thats a bonus. If you subtract the APC from the price youre looking at $15/tb (i think ideally you want $10-12/tb for shucked drives) which for this size is pretty good. Doubt youll be able to sell the battery backup for that much but not a bad thing to have on hand.
what drive is inside? Good for NAS? i used to shuck WD drives for the wd reds back in the day. Sad to see this pricing these days

Indeed, reminds me of the HP Touchpad fire sale days when some retailers had crazy bundles.

4TB is not enough, also WD external drives smaller than 8TB are SMR drives as far as I know.
If I were you, I'd save the money and buy another Blu-ray drive as a backup instead as both Pioneer and LG have discontinued their optical drive divisions. Better get them while you still can.
