I've been torn on trying this game for months, I just can't make my mind up if it's worth trying.
I've been in the same boat. Just asked a guy at work, who months ago swore it was the most fun him and his son have had in a game in a long time... he said the PvE is still the most fun but PvP has some of the most toxic trolls you can imagine. Players that will shoot you in the back after gaining your trust and not to loot you, just to do it and walk off. He said until they add different game types where you can choose PvE & PvP or just PvE then it's going to continue to be a troll haven.
I was RIGHT on the verge of ordering it from Loaded myself when I decided to ask him since he raved about it right after it came out and I heard so many great things end of last year.

I've played for months now and I can agree on the PvP stuff. Another neg is the end game design is not attractive. There are just weekly achievements and not much else to do.
Hard pass on this walking/trash collecting/betrayal simulator. It was fun at lower ranks when all you have is the free loadout. Nobody bothers you. However, when you start to progress to bigger weapons that take hours and hours to grind for, even the kindest "lobby" will watch you kill the arc (which are ripped straight from portal/half life/oblivion) then EVERYONE comes out of the woodwork for your head.
And when I say grinding, I mean it. You will go to the same mission, same warehouse, fight the same arc, for hours if not days to find the part you're looking for. HOPING that it actually spawned, and HOPING that you spawned close enough to it to get to it first, and once you get it, HOPING that nobody saw you get it because they will surely play nice until your back is turned, and HOPING you don't run into one of the generic, bullet sponge, unvaried arc enemies on your way to extract in your hot pink moon suit, to then SORT THE TRASH YOU COLLECTED IN LIMITED INVENTORY SLOTS. I kid you not, that is the game. If you're on the fence, just play Deep Rock Galactic or Helldivers for a MASSIVELY wholesome community and way more fun gameplay. DRG in particular has the best community I've ever played with in any game, and HD2 has gained me some solid online friends after some amazing battles. Both of those games also use procedurally generated maps, whereas Arc uses the same dull maps time after time.
Not only that, but Arc Raiders is AI slop. Vote with your dollars for real developers, real voice actors, real writing, real story, and real games. This one is as half baked as it gets.

I have over 300 hours in it and it's my go to game since October. I don't do PvP but if you don't shoot people first the match making has been very good to me. Yes you will run into people that may kill you but since Oct. Is happened to me around 7 times. The Matchmaking isn't perfect, but there are ways to get out of getting killed and half the fun of it is knowing you MIGHT die. When I die it's 95% to the killer robots and my own stupidity.
When you are in a PvE lobby people will rez/heal you and help in any way they can. That's how I play and those are the lobbies I get put in. That's just my 2 cents but the game is beautiful and I'm having a great time.
The whole appeal in this genre is it being more hardcore, not knowing who you can trust, most of the time being shoot on sight. Being able to kill someone to get something good or to die with something good you can't get back until you find another. Even in pve only games in the genre you will lose your gear/loot if you die.
This game is the only one that really puts you into friendly lobbies when you don't shoot at people. Playing with friends can be a bit more random, but I prefer that. Mostly play solos and there have been time where I'd play for hours and never get betrayed or even shoot at. Only really happened to me a few times. I can understand the frustrations when you don't have a lot of time to play, but it's just how the genre is. This one is by far the most friendly though
I know this is slickdeals, but maybe buy it on Steam and see how you like it, refund it, and if you liked it buy it on the site.
I bought it at launch. Just not my type of game. It just feels like you're grinding with not much more plot or action. Spending hours to find berries and parts to upgrade something and then it's stolen...just doesn't appeal to me.
$20 is a good deal though vs $40. Wish there was more of a focus on everyone trying to take over the robots and whatnot.
As someone who just wants to play PVE, it sounds too toxic and full of rats. Change my mind
I've never shot anybody in the game. It's generally really fun. You do get shot in the back sometimes and it sucks. You can go 20 games or more without getting ratted sometimes though. There are mostly nice players. Destroying robots is fun.

Very well said and that matches my experience 100%. I got this back in October from a Slickdeals Loaded sale, and I saw the comments about, "As long as you don't shoot anyone, you'll be in friendly lobbies." And yes, the first few months, that was the case, but from my experience, things started changing in January, and in February, things got even worse. I tried all the suggestions: Turn off crossplay, set servers to North America, only play Solos, don't play on Tuesdays, and no matter what, the rats are going to find you. By the time I uninstalled the game in March, I would say there was a 33% chance of me being shot at. I regret buying this game and also need to make PvE gamers aware that no matter what you do, you're gonna get shot in the back by low-skill rats with heavy shields and PvP weapons who manipulate the matchmaking to be placed alongside PvE players who are carrying PvE weapons, will never shoot first, and fear defending themselves because it will mess up their matchmaking, giving the rats a tremendous advantage.
I'm not saying this is a bad game necessarily, but not for PvE players. If you enjoy sitting in a bush for 10 minutes at an extract point, shooting unsuspecting players in the back typing away at the console, and a healthy dose of the n-word, this is your game.
I am also now having fun with Deep Rock Galatic and Helldivers 2 now.
