Have one of these, works well but seems overengineered. The battery suction is cute, but it's randomly vacuuming up and after a while the sound of that gets frustrating. The ones like this you simply twist on are preferred. It's a shame they didn't put the electronics on this into a MagSafe charging apparatus instead.

The one I got for $10 definitely accomodates a portrait/vertical mount; very positionable. I even mounted it underneath the shelf of my desk's hutch (upside down). Unfortunately it isn't as compact since it has the extra joint.
You'll hear its motor engage often, depending on the need to resuction. Plastic monitor base: every few seconds. Metal laptop case: every hour or so?
I don't see an on/off switch, so expect a bunch of accidental activations during handling (packed in your luggage). My use case will be for mounting the phone for vacation pics.
I wouldn't expect to see a sticky mess when removing these motorized vacuum mounts since they have a button that helps release the suction. As for painted walls, mine wouldn't attach to my walls because they are textured. Very hit-and-miss on what random surface it will work on.
I believe the magnet portion is adequate. Haven't tested it in a moving vehicle yet.

So if the charge is out, it dropped off or you have to recharge next time you want to stick to different position?
