Gen 2 has 3 main benefits:

2nd Gen UWB chip (Apple U2) - this improves the distance at which "precision finding" is enabled (high accuracy distance measurements)
Higher power radio for BLE transmission
Slightly louder speaker
#2 was likely not too much of an issue before but is an added bonus of upgrading the chip. BLE is enabling the coarse finding and the Find My feature.
To take advantage of #1, you need to have iPhone 15 or newer which is when they introduced U2 on the iPhone side. This chipset has support for the older technology as well so if you have iPhone 14 or older, this AirTag will essentially function as Gen 1 with a slightly louder speaker and slightly better coarse finding.
(I work at a UWB semiconductor supplier and sell UWB chips for a living)

Good price but they've been at this price at Costco since launch

Not sure tech spec wise but tracking distance is better and the alert sound is much louder. Just upgraded all of mine.

I mean I get the whole luggage use case, but what else are people using this for? Genuinely curious. I guess I don't lose things as often as others to justify buying multiple

Exactly, bought to replace those flaky eufy version for my dogs. Still cheaper than ID Chip subscription.

I actually put one in my car because I would forget where I parked in a mall or huge parking lot. Haven't needed it much but nice to know it's there.

I have several in my mother's purse and other items she can carry. She suffers from dementia so this helps us.
