Google Pixel Fold is drawing interest as a surprisingly capable foldable with a big inner display, but it is also notably heavy. The open box listing adds some appeal at this price, and the unlocked model may matter for bootloader tinkering and alternative software. The main cautions are short security support on some units, uncertainty around warranty coverage, and reports of open box wear ranging from scratches to inner screen defects. A solid option if the foldable form factor matters more than long support or pristine condition.
An unlockable bootloader would enable installing alternative Android software such as LineageOS.
The phone can receive security updates until 2028, which supports longer-term protection.
The open-box purchase can still deliver a surprisingly awesome foldable experience despite the form factor.
Insurance reportedly can refund for a defect while allowing the buyer to keep the device.
The open-box unit can arrive with visible wear, including scratches and a bump in the inner screen crease.
Security updates reportedly end at the end of this year, which can limit long-term support.
Insurance coverage for defects may require sending the phone in, and it may not be possible to keep it.
Buying without a warranty can be risky because a refurbished Pixel Fold reportedly developed a dead inner-screen pixel.
