Used to love REI, but don't be fooled by the "coop" halo.

I get 10% back, 1 year returns, and sales like this 20% off, that's pretty dang good in this economy. REI is as good as it gets. People love to complain these days.

REI's normal pricing is the manufacturer's MSRP. They're rarely the best deal on the market, and you can often times get better selection & pricing if you visit a local outdoors gear shop.

10% back *on non-discounted items*

I like REI but the dividend program is very limited unless you pay retail for everything.

Definitely not. Other than DSG, I've never seen anyone beat REI's clearance section.
Also, none of the outdoor gear shops let you return items , usually.
It's very hard to compete against the giants.

Disappointing to hear this, I joined because I get decent deals on work shoes and thought they supported their employees and local businesses. After reading into it a bit seems they are mistreating their union stores just to bully them into not being union, I will be boycotting the sale.

This is about workers, not customers.

The prices on "clearance" and "outlet" at times are very good. I think that the end of season deals are often the best. So now would be the time for folks looking for winter types of clothes or gear.

I used to work in a union and after seeing so many unfit employees who were basically untouchable, can never support a union again. One guy just slept on the job and in meetings. We couldn't fire him. Imagine getting paid a high salary and you can simply sleep. Unions were maybe once good in the past, but I support companies who need work to be done.
This is not a unique problem to union workforces.

Meh. I used to be a part-time REI employee thru college. The employees of the "coop" are the same as those sniveling starbucks employees that want to make as much as electrical engineers. I'm still going in to get my REI shoes, nerds.

100% true to my experience. For example, I was just peeking at smartwool merino base layers for my daughter. REI claims its $48 after 25% off, but the rest of the retailers are already selling either at $48 or lower price without reflecting discount. Almost everything (other than their coop) is available for cheaper elsewhere.
