looking for a 18v - 20v compact brushless drill and impact
would this 12v be good enough for around the house?

This would be enough for most things you need an impact for (driving all sorts of screws). Not strong enough for lug nuts probably. This is the lightest of the DEWALTs, but not the shortest (the atomic DCF850 is the most compact one). You'd just need a hammer drill and a multitool if you pick this one up and you are set for 95% of home stuff. If you're only buying a couple of tools, think about the batteries - 20V is more widely available so you could probably get all the tools on discount in a short period. 12V offers are less frequent I think.

Agree 100%. Speaking as someone with the 12v 3/8 impact, driver, and impact driver, I would NOT suggest getting the DeWalt 12v as your primary tool line. Something light for overhead head work or assembly, fine. They're excellent tools. Plenty of power. I use them over my Ryobi stuff as long as I don't need a ton of torque.
Overall, though, for a 12v system, I still might go with Milwaukee 12v. They have more reliable sales during BF and around holidays and more tools. The DeWalt 12v line doesn't seem to be getting anything new lately. And the signs are there that retailers are dropping them entirely.

We have an old 12v Milwaukee. That thing has put together so much furniture and ceiling fans. Batteries are tired and now they have gone to a new system. This is very tempting... hmm

Just know if you are getting into this line that it's essentially dead. Dewalt will continue to support what is out but they really aren't putting out anything new on the platform.

This beyond smoking hot. Assuming your lowes has the battery.

went to several lowes that had lots of impact stock, but most of them did not have the battery.

and the one that did I had to get an override and pay $.01 for the battery.

but since my local pawn shop has a 12v new drill for $20 so I get a full set for $100.

the lowes people were really helpful and said there were no batteries in the warehouse and searched for all stores that had them for me.

I never fill out surveys, but beyond helpfulness deserves it

P.S. it will take off lugnuts, but only if they were torqued properly. I torque mine at 90 and it took them off, but it took more UgaDugas than I would like.

I bought a 2.99 HF zipper bag, this fits in it great with other essential tools
