My kid recently received one of these with $20 on it as a gift. I immediately deposited it to my Amazon account too.
Now it makes sense. The giver provided a gift receipt, and it looked like it was purchased a year ago.
If you're going to be giving cash gifts to people, you can easily just load up on these when there's no fee and store them for gifts later. There's always teacher appreciation days, holidays, birthdays, etc where you have to give gifts. Worst case, you can liquidate them on Amazon or whatever store of your choosing.
I would avoid these cards like the plague now. I had purchased (2) Visa cards at $200 each sold by Blackhawk Network (BHN aka MyMallGiftCard) from a similar Staples promotion about 6 months ago where they just sat in my drawer until I was going to use them just the other day at Costco. When I went to register the card online and to just confirm the $200 funds on each card, BOTH only had a few cents remaining. After calling Blackhawk, both had charges back in February associated with PAYPAL *BALKHALYASI TIP T, 402-935-7733, US and were NOT made from my own personal PayPay account. They said I can file a dispute within 60 days of original purchase, however, since I was never even aware of these transactions, I'm essentially SOOL because it's already beyond 60 days.
I then Googled this and it appears to have happen to others on Reddit and also reported to the BBB. I'm suspecting that BHN must have been hacked into since how could my Prepaid Visa cards have been used as they were purchased directly from Staples where the cardboard strips to scan was only removed upon purchase.

1. Costco shopping. The machine know the remaining balance. Just swipe.
2. Electricity bill. YMMV. My supplier used to request checking only. But, after a class action, it started to offer credit card option
3. Medical online bill pay. Yeh, it eats up the cards like snacks...
4. Anywhere you don't have 5%+ cashback credit card.
