This open box Galaxy Book5 Pro stands out as a thin 14 inch OLED Windows laptop with a sharp 3K 120 hertz touchscreen, strong Intel Ultra 7 performance, and very good battery life for everyday use and light gaming. The screen and overall build get the most praise, and several pickup units arrived looking nearly new, sometimes with only residue, stickers, or a missing power adapter. The main cautions are the soldered 16 gigabytes of RAM, which feels limiting for heavier multitasking, and repeated concern about fragile AMOLED screen cracking. Open box warranty handling also needs attention, especially on Best Buy units.

These are great. I had the 16" last year and was excited for the Galaxy Book 6 Pro.
But OMG, not the prices they are going for! $$$

I also have a 16" Macbook Pro but much prefer Windows and its the only windows laptop that I've found is somewhat close to a Macbook Pro.

side rant - I love Macbook Pro's touchpad and its hard to find anything that compares but the Galaxy Book Pro comes close.

I bought an open box "excellent" condition Moto Razr 2024+ on best buy back in Feb. Lasted exactly 66 days before the inner screen failed and I got that horrible black line at the crease. Neither Best Buy, or Motorola would take it back or exchange. Moto told me I was "8 days" past the phones manufactur warranty. Best Buy basically said SOL, you had 14 days to return. This has left a very very bad taste in my mouth. Especially since when I purchased what was described as a "new open box excellent condition" phone and thought it came with minimum 1yr warranty. Boy was I wrong.
I try to use a credit card that has extended warranty protection. Terms might differ depending on the issuer, but my Chase cards view open box as eligible for the extended warranty.

How does this compare to a Steam Deck or ROG Ally for on-the-go/commute gaming?

My understanding is you'll need a portable power bank to keep the laptop going for a couple extra hours.
If gaming on the go is a priority, then buy a device made for gaming on the go. This is a general use laptop, and even though the hardware benches faster on paper, the screen is more than double resolution of steam deck and is a lot harder to drive which will impact the performance. Of course steam deck is only good at 1 thing, and this is a multi-tasker that can also game to a degree, but you will probably have to bring a controller with you.

You won't have issues with the screen cracking if you take some extra care. I've owned this laptop for a year, and I always close the lid gently. Also, if the laptop heats up, you should let it cool before closing the lid. Since this laptop has a glass display and narrow bezels, it does feel more fragile than other laptops. Then again, it's a very nice laptop with a gorgeous display in a sleek body, and it feels very premium.

My personal use case is gaming while commuting, on a plane, and maybe at the cafe/library. I do intend to use a separate, full-size 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless controller. The handheld form factor and portability of a Steam Deck or ROG Ally isn't my top priority.

That's the risk you take when you buy open-box and refurbished items. Even credit cards don't cover an extended warranty for anything that's not new.
Eh, life's a risk carnal

Good processor but light on RAM
I have the Book4 360 with 16g Ram and it's struggling already running a couple of windows. OK for now but future OS upgrades probably won't run and can't upgrade like this one.

Be very careful with Galaxy Book laptops. Apparently, the screen is very fragile and there have been quite a few reports from owners starting that their screen has spontaneously cracked in spite of it never having been dropped or even bumped. If you decide to buy, get an extended warranty that will cover such damage should it ever happen to you.
Agreed. Went through this with my Book 4 Edge. Followed all the tips to prevent the screen from cracking and one day I picked it up from the bottom and heard the crack. It's not noticeable when using it, but you definitely see it when it's not powered on. Totally turned me off of buying Samsung laptops ever again.
