I use an echo dot (hockey puck style one) for streaming music to bluetooth outdoor speakers in the backyard.
The dot is kinda starting to die....been sitting outside for years and voice recognition is getting worse and worse.

This seems like it would do the same thing....any reason to get this over a newer echo dot?

Thanks, OP. Ordered this so I can stream audio on a vintage audio receiver and speakers. Anyone else do that and how well does it work and sound? And even though Air Play is a feature, does it work almost as good with Android phones?

When I looked it up online in the past, people say the Wiim has much better sound quality than a Dot. But not sure if that is via cable output only or if it would also apply to bluetooth streaming.

I just bought one to replace an echo dot 3. These were my main motivations:
  1. Better app control of music
  2. Better streaming quality (24 bit, 192 kHz)
  3. Digital out (since I will bypass the DAC and send the digital signal via optical to an amp with a better DAC).
In addition to these advantages, you don't really lose out on convenience since you are still able to use Alexa voice control when the WiiM mini is set up as the speaker for an echo or room in the Alexa app.

Thanks for the info.

Did you notice any improvement in voice recognition with this over the dot?

I just ordered it this morning. It should arrive in the next couple of hours and I can report anything notable.

However, my understanding it that the WiiM Mini doesn't have native voice control, but it can be used as a speaker in the Echo ecosystem so that you would be talking to an existing Echo device for the voice control but it will play on the WiiM. This works for me as I have Echo dots in the same room. Conversely, if you currently use a single standalone Echo Dot and want to replace it with a standalone WiiM mini, you won't have voice control other than through the Alexa app.

I hope that's not the case. That would be a deal breaker.

Need voce control from in the pool

Doesn't work with Google Home or Google Home speaker groups, and associated Spotify features.

Mine just arrived (less than four hours from placing the order Smilie ). As I am setting it up, I can see that there is a voice remote available (https://www.amazon.com/WiiM-Remot...0BVVDCQ2V/). However, this would be press-to-speak voice control rather than hands-free voice control.

Back to the drawing board.

The WiiM app gives you access to many streaming services (Amazon, Deezer, Napster, Pandora, Plex, Qobuz, SoundCloud, SoundMachine, Spotify and TIDAL) as well as open network streams, plus BBC Radio, Calm Radio, iHeartRadio, Radio Paradise, TuneIn and vTuner.

The main reason to use AirPlay (as far as I can tell) is to stream Apple Music. Apple generally doesn't permit Apple Music on third-party devices. (There are a few notable exceptions such as EverSolo and FiiO streamers, and Rivian and GM vehicles). Therefore, for Apple Music you need to stream from the Apple Music app on your device and transmit the stream via AirPlay. If you use one of the streaming services listed above, you can just use the WiiM app to stream directly from the WiiM without compatibility issues.

Thanks for the helpful explanation. Yeah, I don't use Apple Music since I'm on Android but those other streaming services will be nice to have on the device.
