We unlock mobile devices that meet the following eligibility criteria free of charge:
The device must be purchased from Metro by T-Mobile.
The device must not be reported as lost, stolen or blocked.
Three hundred sixty-five (365) days must have passed since the device's activation date.
In summary, same device available via:
Metro for $65 ... auto unlocks in 365 days, continuing the service after 1st month/initial payment not required
Total Wireless for $40 ... will never unlock unless paid for 1 whole year of service (which is not worth - better use case is to use it as wifi only or cheaper service via rebranding to tracfone etc, ymmv)

For all cellphones Activated on or after January 20, 2026, the cellphone will be unlocked upon request after 365 days of paid and active service.
I had a total wireless device before that date and I needed 60 days of total service (doesnt have to be consecutive). I forgot to mention you can get the 10$ monthly plan they offer but it is only text and call. No data.

No it needs to be activated with the new service to start the timer
You should just pay the extra $25 and get from Metro at least it auto unlocks in 1 year

If purchased from Total Wireless for $40 ... will never unlock unless paid for 1 whole year of service (which is not worth) Buy this only if you plan to use the service or use it as a wifi only device. YMMV on rebranding across TracFone suite of service providers.

For all cellphones Activated on or after January 20, 2026, the cellphone will be unlocked upon request after 365 days of paid and active service.
