Unlock eligibility requirements

In summary, same device available via:

Metro for $65 ... auto unlocks in 365 days, continuing the service after 1st month/initial payment not required
Total Wireless for $40 ... will never unlock unless paid for 1 whole year of service (which is not worth - better use case is to use it as wifi only or cheaper service via rebranding to tracfone etc, ymmv)

Thanks for the response, to be clear, I have to rebrand it first with a live TF customer person, then I can do online activate & transfer TF service as if it was a regular TF phone? Does the 'rebrand' process factory-reset the phone?

Rebranding only changes their dtabase to show that the TW SIM is now a TF SIM. Nothing is changed in the phone itself.

If Autopay is OFF, you don't get charged after the 1st month of service runs out.

You certainly can. That's what I'm doing with my Metro-locked Moto G Stylus 2025 after its one month of service ran out in March. If the phone has no cell service, put it in Airplane Mode to keep it from hunting for towers and using up battery.
