Unlock eligibility requirements
We unlock mobile devices that meet the following eligibility criteria free of charge:
The device must be purchased from Metro by T-Mobile.
The device must not be reported as lost, stolen or blocked.
Three hundred sixty-five (365) days must have passed since the device's activation date.
In summary, same device available via:
Metro for $65 ... auto unlocks in 365 days, continuing the service after 1st month/initial payment not required
Total Wireless for $40 ... will never unlock unless paid for 1 whole year of service (which is not worth - better use case is to use it as wifi only or cheaper service via rebranding to tracfone etc, ymmv)

E: shipping update says its being delivered tomorrow
I ordered May 7th, shipped May 8th, received May 12th. Even got a confirmation email from Chase credit card, a $10 credit was applied because of special deal with Total wireless. So this came out to $30 for me.
Just for kicks I checked in TF's website for activating with this phone, and after entering IMEI, it said there was a problem. This was after I already activated it with TW, so maybe that had an effect. I may have to request TF to rebrand when my included first month of TW service ends. The bootup screen shows a Verizon logo, not total wireless or Tracfone. The settings about phone shows it's provisioned for Tracfone interestingly, out of the box, even after Total wireless activation. Even the sim card included begins with a 'TFXXXXX' which is standard for Tracfone SIMs.
Unlock for this phone after 1 year doesn't matter for a lot of us who are already on a Verizon MNVO, like Tracfone, we can just use this phone before the 1 year expiration. It's only for those interested in fully unlocking to use on Tmobile or AT&T that have to wait the full year.
