These are not the Transporter Expandable 26 + 6 packs. These are 22 liter packs.

FWIW: I go backpacking with my son and have budget-friendly Wal-mart brand items and struggle with envy over the people that have Osprey gear

If you are using it a lot for travel, then yes. The ergonomics of osprey or comparable backpacks alleviate a lot of potential aches.

Osprey backpacks also carry a lifetime guarantee* as well. https://www.osprey.com/customer-s...-guarantee

I have a different bag and the quality and comfort are worth the price for me as well as knowing I'm covered for zippers or such.

Absolutely worth it for most people. They are designed well and use good quality materiala that will last, in fact they have lifetime warranty which is not particularly common in the backpack world.

Also they are designed to be comfortable, cheaper packs from Amazon and Walmart or school style bags like what Jansport make - Those are made to sell at retail stores, to trigger an impulse buy or to compare well vs the other ones on the shelf. They're locked in a race to the bottom.

Osprey is at the lower end of the price scale for high quality backpacks but they're made as well if not better than many that cost a lot more.

If you have a younger spine and don't really care that much about comfort, or you're getting a small bag that won't be heavy, and you don't use it often and are fairly gentle with your things, you may well be happy with one of the bags from Walmart or your local random store. In fact there are some that bag nerds mention for being decent quality at amazing low prices both from Walmart and also Decathalon, but if you want something that will last and or be comfortable - Osprey is a great place to start. Comfort is subjective and different bags are made for different bodies so it's nice to try them on if you can.

Osprey lifetime warranty actual means something. Maxpedition, Swiss Gear, and other low-end bag companies will dismiss almost any claim as "wear and tear" which is not covered. broken zipper or buckle, stitches coming loose are all "normal wear and tear". Osprey is extremely generous on what they will fix or replace at no charge. Osprey's bags are well made with excellent materials so it's unlikely you'll ever need the warranty. A cheap disposable bag might be perfectly reasonable for some uses, but Osprey is really premium and the warranty reflects that as well.
