Thanks! I've had several of the larger E-500 model for years and they've been great.

A common complaint for this model is that the beads stop changing color after awhile.
Someone took it apart and noticed that the beads in the window, that show the color change, had become burnt which is why they stopped changing color. The beads within the unit were dry after recharging but you couldn't tell because the ones in the window lost their ability to change color. The unit had done it's job and dried out the beads after recharging but you couldn't tell. He just replaced the beads in the window with beads from within the body, which were dry, and then the unit indicated when the beads were dry again.

What likely happens is that the beads in the window get too hot from one long heating cycle. A possible fix is to dry the beads in stages, that is, plug the unit in for half the time then let the unit cool down for awhile, say an hour or so then plug it in for the rest of the heating cycle. Bothersome, yes, but not too much if a timer is used.

Oh damn. I wanted to use a smaller one for the kids room because I run two larger noisier ones in two spots during summer, but I wanted something smaller and quieter. What went wrong?

I bought a few very similar to this from Aldi, which have a lifetime warranty. I have yet to have to use that though! I think I will pick up a few of these to see if they're comparable.

it doesn't work for its intended purpose, even if you put it in a tiny cabinet. Need to recharge frequently. Indicator stops working after ~ year or two.

Sounds like you have a humidity problem. You can't expect one of these to drop the RH of your entire house and even a closed cabinet breathes. Not to mention if the cabinet is wood or similar, then it too will absurd, hold, and release humidity from the surrounding area...even with the tiny cabinet's door closed. Even if the cabinet is not a material that can absorb humidity (metal, plastic, etc), if the cabinet isn't sealed, at least somewhat, then the size of the cabinet hardly matters.

Let me guess, your windows 'sweat' in winter....

FWIW, I have several of these, they are awesome in my gun metal cabinets (not even sealed "safes") and I also keep one in each car's truck. The ones in the cars need recharging once a month but the ones in the gun cabinets only need recharging once or twice a year. The indicator stops working if they get way too 'wet' and stay that way...like far more 'wet' than normal use. Again, suggesting you are not addressing the actual humidity problem, just trying to throw a band aid on it.

P.S. These are this price often at LIDL.

This will not work in a room or even closet. I would only use these to throw in a safe or sealed storage bin of some kind. This will probably remove as much water as a true dehumidifier running for 3 minutes before it needs to be recharged (and correct me if im wrong but recharging it just heats up the beads so they dry out which simply releases the moisture back into the air).

I leave one of these in my car and the windows never fog up.
I keep one in a zip lock and toss my phone in there when its raining.

It will not suck up moisture in a large room. It will but it does not have the capacity for large amounts of moisture without a recharge. Small enclosed spaces work best.

so this is just silica beads with a build in dryer? you can get a jug of color changing silica beads for about 5 bucks a lb (get the green, blue is toxic) and dry them out in the oven when they change color. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CFDZ79YN?th=1
I use them in the safe, and keeping filament, and guns and ammo dry.
