This open box ASUS ROG Flow Z13 stands out as a compact, very powerful Windows tablet for local AI work and gaming. The 64GB memory and Ryzen AI Max Plus 395 are praised for running large local models, including Qwen 3.6 35B and other 70B class setups, while gaming stays smooth even in recent titles and on lower power settings. Battery life can stretch through long flights with a 70W charger, and Linux support plus SSD upgrades have been reported as straightforward. The main tradeoffs are the 13.4 inch screen, open box uncertainty, and possible warranty reduction if the previous owner registered it.

  • Local LLM builders running 35B to 70B models, because 64GB lets them fit larger contexts and the machine handles local inference well.

  • Traveling power users who need a compact workstation, because it can last through a long flight and still drive gaming or desktop-class workloads.

  • Gamers who want a portable Windows machine for recent AAA titles, because recent releases run smoothly without throttling.

  • Linux tinkerers who want a small machine with easy storage upgrades, because Fedora runs without issues and the SSD is the only upgradable part.

  • Users relying on USB-C charging without mode switching, because some chargers can trigger repeated charge and discharge cycling.

  • Shoppers who need a full-size display for multitasking, because the 13.4-inch screen is the main drawback.

  • People expecting a full one-year warranty on an open-box unit, because prior registration can reduce coverage to about three months.

  • Image and video generation workflows, because the AI Max chip is described as too slow to be useful for those tasks.

I'm trying to figure out the use case for this much RAM.
128GB? OK, I can run a model in the 60-80GB range with context. Huge step up from the smaller models.
But 64GB of RAM? ...
Better to have a headless machine over the network with 128 GB accessed remotely. It's worth the step up.
Or the 128gb of this, but then are you truly going to run your llm on a laptop? Again, may as well just ssh or tailscale into a remote box with more ram to work with, strix halo, dgx spark, or sufficiently sized pcie cards.
64GB should let you do 70B model in Q4, maybe Q6, which is not bad, compare to Q8 on 128GB.

I'm using this amazing machine right now (with the 64GB) for OpenClaw with local models. It's slower than my desktop RTX 5090 but I can fit twice as large of models with large context windows and the latest MoE models speeds up things considerably. I do test it against OpenAI's models to compare and my local model responds just as fast.

The SSD is the only thing upgradable so I put in a 2TB drive and have installed Fedora. No issues with Linux.

Was looking for panther lake laptops, but they are wildly more expensive. Would probably be better to get either the open box of this, or the new version. Panther lakes only benefit over this would be battery life, but this would be far better for local LLMs. The main downside is the screen size
I also just picked up a Panther Lake 358H with the Intel Arc B390. Impressive for an iGPU but cannot hold up to the Z13 for gaming. Getting about 12 hours on that machine with light usage.

One thing to keep in mind with Asus and open box, if the previous owner registered it then you will get a modified 3 month warranty when you go to register, not the full year. I fought with Asus and got nowhere on a previous purchase.

What's the most demanding games you played consecutively for a few hours on this? Did it throttle from the temperature getting too hot?
Not really demanding but mostly recently released titles. RE9, AC Shadows, Horizon Forbidden West.... all run smoothly. No throttle since it is pasted with Liquid Metal plus the intake fan placement is at the top instead at the bottom. This is the charging adapter I used on airplane amazon.com/dp/B0FCSDD9H3

M5 Max with 128GB RAM is $5000 though... 3x more than this deal. But those 128GB are on a faster connection than this LPDDR5x (512-bit vs 128-bit). To give you an idea how fast the RAM in M5 Max, it is almost as fast as RTX 5070 GPU's memory speed.
So, it is not that this AMD processor lacks in AI computing power compare to M5 Max, it lacks memory speed by a mile...
Oh yes It is $5K lol it is damn expensive. I can't return it anymore and I don't wanna go to 32 GPUs either and it comes in at some weird memory config at 32 GPUs. was it 36? and next upgrade was like 64GB and eventually I price laddered it to 128GB.

For performance, memory bus is a limiting factor for LLMS (txt)

I still think compute power is lacking though between AI Max Chip. It's respectable but seems to be geekbench of 72-76% of a M5 Max (I found an image online).

Anyway, all this doesn't matter if you want image/videos, Mac and AMD Max Chips both suck compared to even the older desktop nvidia chips 30xx for example in image/video generation. m5 max is pitiful on this too. Pretty sure my RTX 2070 can generate 1080 images faster than this m5 max also.

If someone is looking to eventually generate image/video don't get a Mac or AMD AI Max chip, you will regret it as it too slow to be useful. (Idk how good AMD GPU RocM support is but pretty sure that is still not there yet).

Using one now. Excellent device. Gaming is excellent even on lower TDP. Helped me get through 13 hours flight with a 70W charger.

For $1600 for 64GB version that is hella steal. I paid almost $2400 few months ago
On the lower wattage charger, do you just mute the notifications about having a slow charger? I ended up bringing the brick with me because the computer constantly cycles at full charge between silent and performance modes, because the USB-C port doesn't pass through power... it just charges the battery, which then discharges a little, charges up again, etc.

Open box = used. Needs to be in title. They're not fake refurbished. Just straight returns that weren't checked since they were dropped off at the counter.
Does it need to be in the title though? That is what "open box" means, it is not like it is trying to say it is refurbished.

Can you comment on running models like Qwen 3.6 35b on the B390 vs this? Very interested in both but can't find benchmarks on the PTL for LLMs

This point can be really annoying. I had a Z13 for a few months last year and with certain 100w chargers it would charge up then stop charging, only to start charging again when it reached a certain threshold. If you have your device set to switch modes based on charge state this can get annoying REAL fast. What I found with 70w and lower chargers is that it's best to create a custom profile that's somewhere between Quiet and Balanced so that it's not using more wattage than a lower wattage charger can provide. This will help extend playtime and SHOULD make it so the charger isn't switching on and off constantly.

For the experts that have been tinkering for a bit here - is Unified Memory old news now? It's pretty capable, but it seems like optimization of MoE models for splitting between VRAM and RAM is getting somewhere, and they are running much better on systems with 16GB (or less GPUs). Will we still be talking about Unified Memory systems for dedicated AI Rigs in 2027?

Thanks, and yeah, I think I'm going to have to change the settings so it doesn't switch modes if I'm on a smaller charger. Appreciate it! Glad I am not the only one this drove nuts

It is on sale for $2050 new if you don't want to deal with the open-box lottery.
Is the price for new still considered slick?
