So yeah clear out everyone including pets and put warning signs on your doors if you plan to use it in the house. These are great for making an old or smoked in car smell fresh again - run the internal air circulator on the car while using so the ozone gets the HVAC pipes as well. Unplug it from the extension cord when done (don't open the car and take a big whiff of toxic air while you fumble to turn it off). Again signs! and lock the doors to the car as well while it is in use. A while after unplugging the ozone generator you can open the doors of the car and let it vent out but keep an eye on it while it is venting out for a bit.

Claims to get rid of stale cig odor, which would be great. Wish I had known about a machine like this when I was a smoker!

Yes, ozone generators can be highly dangerous to human and animal health when used in occupied spaces. They are designed to create a reactive gas ($O_3$) that can damage lung tissue, cause coughing and shortness of breath, and aggravate respiratory conditions such as asthma or COPD. [1, 2, 3]
Major health and safety agencies, including the EPA and California Air Resources Board (CARB), recommend against using these devices in homes. [1]
Why Ozone Generators are Dangerous
- Respiratory Harm: Ozone is a powerful oxidizer that destroys organic cells, including those in the human respiratory system.
- "Bad Nearby": While ozone in the upper atmosphere is protective, ground-level ozone is a primary component of smog and is toxic to breathe.
- Ineffective Air Cleaning: At concentrations low enough to be safe, ozone is ineffective at cleaning the air, removing odors, or eliminating mold.
- Creates Other Pollutants: Ozone can react with chemicals in the home (like from cleaning products) to produce formaldehyde and other harmful compounds.
- Damages Materials: High ozone levels can degrade rubber, damage electrical wiring, and ruin fabrics. [4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10]
Safe Use Guidelines (Only for Unoccupied Spaces) [3]If you must use an ozone generator for extreme odors, such as fire restoration or heavy tobacco smoke, follow these strict rules to avoid serious illness or death: [3, 11]
- Never operate the device while people, pets, or plants are in the room.
- Only use in entirely vacant, unoccupied spaces.
- Ventilate the area well, often for 1–2 hours or more, before re-entering.
- Set a timer so the unit turns off automatically. [4, 11, 12, 13]
Safer AlternativesFor everyday air purification, experts recommend using air cleaners that use physical filters rather than releasing substances into the air: [14, 15, 16]
- HEPA Filters: Highly effective at removing particles like dust, pollen, and smoke.
- Activated Carbon Filters: Excellent for removing odors and gases.
- Source Removal: The best way to improve indoor air quality is to remove the source of the pollutant and improve ventilation. [1, 17, 18]

[19, 20]https://share.google/aimode/JOUadO2HlklR74pIt's kind of funny, to me, the smell of the ozonator is almost worse then some smells that it cleans up. It lingers for a long long time. Sometimes months. It's just a different smell. I just find it kind of obnoxious. I used it in my car 3 months ago and it's just now going away. I bought a new car and the previous owner smoked in it and so I used it and it took forever to get out the ozone smell.
Returned too early and didn't air the area out? You will have a mild burning throat and a mild persistent cough. You will not die, just go to fresh air and breathe. If you are really worried about inhaling ozone, use an organic filter (3M P100) with your respirator mask.
One unfortunate side effect of using an ozone generator, I have found, is that you will start smelling ozone everywhere.
