Was going to buy this until I saw people at REI's website reviewing it to start pilling after first use. For this type of money this is unacceptable.

You wouldn't want to wear something that's 100% wool.
I have a 100% Merino Wool base layer from LL Bean that barely pills and is insanely breathable while also warm... great for trail running!

The wool quality and how it's used can cause itchiness.
But the reason you want a blend, 80/20, is increased durability.

Merino wool base layers are really amazing. I thought the same but it regulates temp and wicks sweat really well.

I'm a big fan, but thought it should be a merino blend. Not pure.

100% Merino Wool
  • Best for: Cold-weather, stop-start activities (like hiking or skiing), and multi-day trips where you won't wash your gear.
  • Pros: Unmatched softness against the skin, superior temperature regulation, and high resistance to odor because of wool's natural antibacterial properties.
  • Cons: Fragile. It is prone to stretching out of shape and wearing out quickly, particularly if subjected to friction from backpack straps
Merino Blends (e.g., 85% Merino / 15% Nylon)
  • Best for: High-output activities, everyday wear, and travelers who need a garment that can survive heavy wear and tear.
  • Pros: Highly durable. Blending in synthetics (like nylon or polyester) helps the base layer resist tears, prevents holes from forming, and allows it to bounce back into its original shape.
  • Cons: Slightly less soft and odor-resistant than pure wool, and it might trap moisture or dry a bit slower depending on the synthetic ratio
