In any of the hundreds of countries the iPhone satellite messaging service isn't available. It has a number of features the iPhone's satellite connectivity lacks, it is far more energy efficient and reliable in the case of long trips, backcountry, wilderness, and isolated locations. For going on a day hike in most of western Europe or North America the iPhone's satellite connectivity features are more than sufficient, but otherwise Garmin devices that use the Iridium network are a better choice.

Ah guess I've been living in a bubble. Didn't think about the restrictions in other countries. I also did learn more about the iphone satellite connection:

- the satellites it communicates with are pretty much just mirrors that bounces signals to ground stations. The satellites themselves have no proper infrastructure to communicate with a network directly, unlike the irridium one that the garmin talks to.
- Even if you have ground stations nearby, the phone looks at the GPS location to see if you're allowed to us it there, so country restrictions still apply.
- The need for "nearby" groundstations mean it won't work in the middle of the ocean for example, even though there aren't laws against its use.
- Phones purchased in countries like Russia and China have this function disabled at the firmware level.

Asked a stupid question, learned a lot! Thanks.

Looks like there are restrictions on communications with the iridium satellites too. You gotta register it in russia for example and there are ways to find you if you used it there anyway. The data communicated with these satellites are often unencrypted and would contain metadata which includes your exact location 🫠

Still great for the middle of the ocean and many more parts of the world than the iphone for sure
