So SO much better than the twist dial weights. You can hold these close enough to your body to do a natural curl vs the twist weights are always too wide.
I do recommend getting the stand if you can also afford that. You can also add weights to this as you progress vs being g stuck at the lower weights of many of the twist dials.

PowerBlock EXP adjustable dumbbells are praised as a compact, durable alternative to twist dial sets, with a more natural curl position, quick weight changes, and easy expansion as strength increases. The stand gets strong support for keeping the weights off the floor, reducing bending, and making the setup feel more convenient over time. Main tradeoffs are the bulky cage, thicker rubber grips, and occasional awkwardness for curls or small hands. Compatibility for bars and some expansion kits is limited, so future add ons need checking.

Common Questions (5)

  • The stand mainly adds convenience by giving you a flat place to change weights and keeping the dumbbells off the floor. It also reduces bending and back strain with heavier sets, and several owners say it makes the setup much easier to live with long term.

  • Yes, the EXP can be expanded with later stages, and several comments warn that expansions may be harder to find if the line is discontinued. Buying the stages you expect to need up front avoids paying more or hunting for stock later.

    EpicDealzLavenderWalrus2248EdEd1190ElatedNose426

  • The rectangular PowerBlock shape lets you hold the weights closer to your body for a more natural curl than twist-dial designs. It also lets you add expansion stages later instead of being stuck at the lower weight range of many dial systems.

    EpicDealzsleekdillsEpicDealzOctavioH1130

  • The listed EXP set does not work with the barbell, kettlebell, or EZ-bar attachments, and PowerBlock does not make a clamp-on bar for this model. The compatible bar accessory appears to exist for the 90 EXP instead, not this deal's EXP version.

  • The Pro 50 uses knurled stainless grips and urethane-coated weights, which are quieter but bulkier. The EXP uses a rubber grip and uncoated metal weights, and the EXP can reportedly be upgraded with knurled grips later.

I went with the Eisenlink dumbells and although those are built like a tank and I do like them Storing the extra plates is kind of a chore and I kind of wish I went with the Powerblocks. I didn't because I didn't think I would like the side bars hitting my wrist and I still probably wouldn't like that part I may have preferred to deal with that than the loose plates and the slower weight changes of the Eisenlinks.

I believe the elites are the ones with the restrictive bars. The standard ones don't seem to have the same bars.

Should I get these or the Elite USA 90 EXP ones (from their website)?
I have the trainer set now (love them), and they only go up to 50 lbs. Looking to increase the weight capacity. Thinking either this one or the USA 90 ones may be worth it.

I'm bummed having the Elite USA which never goes on sale anymore and just needing stage 3. Should have gotten it while it was on sale years ago, that's the last I've seen it.

Could anyone explain why stands are worth it? Mostly convenient than picking up from the ground or any other use case I might be missing?

Purely convenience. But given that these things will last you the rest of your life, that's a lot of cumulative convenience!
