I have the 8" version of this and love it. I'm able to cut down thick branches that my lopper can't go through.

I've got the older version of this and it's serviceable, but not worth $80 to me. obviously ymmv, but my local hd has the 8" brushless on clearance for $120, even though the website doesn't reflect it. 2"+brushless may be worth $30 for some people.

I own almost every Ryobi 18v tool, but wouldn't pay this for that. I have a similar no name Chinese 8" saw, which came with two batteries and a charger for $17. It works fine.

Same here, except mine was $40. It does what I need it to do. If you need to cut thicker branches, just don't apply too much pressure and give it time to cool if needed. People buy them and try to cut logs with them and end up burning up the motor.

just keep in mind that the claim that these are an "oil free design", like its a good thing, is actually the marketing way of saying... "we didnt include an auto oiler, so you have to do it by hand."

and you have to oil them very often or you will be destroying both the bar and the chain rapidly.

id rather spend 20-30 bucks on china-express and buy a no name version...

speaking of, you can also get those that fit lots of different batteries. i have one for my m18 batteries. they make them for dewalt, milwaukee, etc. none for ryobi though.

I've been on the fence of buying one of these. I get a lot of 2-4" branches down around us. Usually i gather them up until i have enough to justify getting the real chainsaw out and cutting for firewood. Would something like this be able to handle portioning them out for firewood and be a meaningful improvement? Or is it basically like doing it with a sawzall?

Same. Bought this one:
6" Seesii Mini Cordless Electric Hand Chainsaw w/ 2x 21V Batteries

$20 ... works very well for my purposes.

Check camelcamelcamel I have seen it go on sale here on slickdeals a few times but since I already have one I didn't mark my calender and do a spreadsheet on the sales pattern.
