Old deleted messages back in Inbox

A large amount of old deleted messages are showing in my message Inbox again, filling it up. Does selecting and deleting messages not permanently delete them? Is there some recycle/trash bin I need to empty?

No, you don't have to do anything else to delete messages.
How long ago did you delete these messages? Were they deleted at different times?
When did they pop back into your inbox? Can you estimate how many PMs came back?

Sorry for late reply.
I had been deleting old messages every so often, starting from the oldest.
I deleted at different times.
I noticed number of messages went up a lot recently.
It looked like a lot of old messages came back and they appear as read messages.
I'm guessing probably around several hundred.
