If you're a fan of classic JRPGs like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 2D, this is a must. The visuals and mechanics are modernized but the essence of classic JRPGs is kept. Best part is you can play up to 3 player coop. I finished the campaign with a friend over several sessions... Overall pay time sits around 17hrs in-game. Well worth the money.

Awesome couch coop RPG!! It has many fun twists and turns and feels like a mix of Secret of Mana and early Zelda and Earthbound.

Buy it and play with your kids for a blast!

It's $15.74 if you already own either The Messenger or Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove

Killer soundtrack too! They provide it to you in both WAV and MP3, which is very nice.

I enjoyed the game a lot. Very derivative of Chrono Trigger, but I could certainly think of worse games to be derivative of. I started playing it for free on PS+ and it got removed before I could finish the game so I paid for the full game to finish it.

The writing is garbage. You can't have garbage writing in this kind of JRPG. It makes it unplayable.

There's always one. ;P

Folks like you seem to forget the writing of classic RPGs that this is based on. They're not College Level Essays on the nature of man. This guy are sick after all. ;P

There's a new opening cinematic, new scene(s) later, and some gameplay balancing. Beyond that It's their fancy name for the "Final Update". ;P

I'm an old gamer and I love everything this game was trying so hard to be... I was so excited for it leading up to release but it just never clicked with me. I forced myself to play through it and it just became a slog. The story half-baked, not remotely compelling and just plain boring. Yasunori Mitsuda's contributions were stunning as always but the rest of the music was very meh. Burying the good ending under a big slog of a checklist just annoyed me even further after forcing myself to finish the game I wasn't enjoying. Watched the 'good' ending on YouTube instead and not bothering to chase it was the correct choice... Maybe we'll get a real Chrono Trigger sequel some day or an HD-2D remake because that's all this game made me wish I was playing.

It's not about college level writing. I read web novels and fanfics and crap all the time. It's about dialogue that doesn't feel like it's coming from characters, but words to push the plot forward. Writing done in the service of filling a text box because that's how JRPGs go, not in service of telling a story.

I think the biggest issue is that you're comparing this game to Chrono Trigger, or Final Fantasy VI, where the budget is more Secret of the Stars. No, it does not stand up to the genre giants that are To This Day still foundational games. But it was never Going to, nor is it even Trying to.

I think a Part of it is that I've played their other game (The one that this is Prequel to) and so I came in knowing the irreverent and referential style of humor that they were going to go with in their writing. They weren't making the Next Epic RPG, they were making "The Greatest RPG in the World... Tribute" game. And I think they Nailed it.

I also disagree about the writing, and I think part of your issue is that you don't "Like" the characters. Which is fine, but that's a different "Problem" than to say they aren't characters. I think they do a great job of conveying the characters "As they are intended". For Christmas's Sake, one of the character's *Schtick* is walking off the screen and coming back in costume "Without anyone noticing". ;P

Perhaps it's an issue of the presentation (Which is gorgeous) conflicting with the writing style? But even then I think it works, as the presentation is the "Straight Man" in this story. And while I'd like to have seen them go a little further with the battle system, I think it was plenty fun and delivered on their "This is a slightly modernized classic RPG Battle System" intent.
