A circular saw is gonna drain these in an instant. If you plan on cutting for six hours you're gonna want at least a pair of 5AH or just go corded. They're great for a driver or wrench, but again it all depends on how much work you plan on doing. Some people will use more battery in 30 minutes than others will use in six hours. For example going hog wild with an angle grinder or a chainsaw
These compact 1.7Ah DeWALT Powerstack batteries are best for lighter tools where size and weight matter, especially drills, drivers, wrenches, and power pruners. The smaller form factor makes extended use easier, and the pack can still briefly handle higher draw tools like impact wrenches. Runtime is the main limitation, since circular saws, angle grinders, and chainsaws can drain them fast. The branding has also changed over time, with newer packs showing XR and older ones showing Power Stack labeling.
Tradespeople using impact wrenches or drivers, because the compact pack delivers sustained power while staying small in the hand.
The packaging and side badging are the easiest clues: newer packs can show only XR, while older ones may say PowerStack with blue lines or show both XR and PowerStack. Some buyers received older-labeled stock, but the batteries were dated 2024 and worked normally.
They are better suited to lower-draw tools like drivers and wrenches. A circular saw, angle grinder, or chainsaw can drain the 1.7Ah packs very quickly, so larger 5Ah or 6Ah batteries are a better fit for long cutting jobs.
They work well for drills, impact wrenches, and power pruners where a compact battery keeps the tool lighter and less fatiguing. The smaller form factor helps on extended-reach tools, and they can still briefly handle higher-draw tools when needed.
Are 1.7Ah power stack batteries better than 3.5Ah and higher batteries and are they recommended for a 6hr job on circular saw. Impact driver and impact wrench?

Depends on what you are doing during your 6 hour job

30 minutes of work, 5 1/2 hours drinking beer and you'll do just fine in those 6 hours.
You're better off buying 6ah batteries when they go on sale near $10 an ah.
Also recommend a 6 amp charger, so you're not waiting 3 hours for them to recharge.

How can we check that? I can stop by lowes tomorrow
The battery "badging", should show on the packaging as well. If it has "XR" on the side its newer. If it has "Power Stack" in big letters with the blue lines next to it, its the old versions.

I like these for my power pruners as you're working with the tool arms fully extended so the big batteries weigh you down after a while
I ordered a pack at 8a. at 930a 2pack set delivered to front door.
My package is the Old labeling no XR branding just Power Stack. I had a set from a few years back. No issues. These are fine for drills and other lower power items.

The power powerstack batteries are the newer one (they use cell pouches), and XR are older (they use the traditional cylindrical batteries, like shape of AA)
Edit - looks like I was wrong. Can't keep track of Dewalts branding changes.

DeWALT has really changed their labelling on these a lot. For a long while they were PowerStack. Then they shifted to XR and PowerStack both being printed on the battery. Now, on the latest batteries, they will only say XR with the new label. https://www.dewalt.com/en-us/prod...ct-battery

These 1.7Ah Powerstack batteries deliver sustained power over the course of a charge in a compact form factor.
These batteries can briefly run higher-draw tools like impact wrenches without needing a larger pack immediately.
These batteries can be a practical fit for power pruners because the smaller pack helps avoid added weight.
These batteries can work fine for drills and other lower-power items even when the received labeling is older.
Some shipments may include older-labeled packs, which can create uncertainty even when the batteries still function.
A circular saw can drain 1.7Ah Powerstack batteries quickly, making them a poor match for long cutting sessions.
High-draw tools such as angle grinders or chainsaws can consume these batteries much faster than lower-draw tools.
The 1.7Ah capacity can feel too small to be worthwhile for many users' needs.
