Nobody owes you a $600 phone at a fraction of its value. The massive discount exists because the carrier expects to recover part of that cost through a defined period of service. If you're intentionally trying to get the discounted phone while avoiding the commitment that justified the discount in the first place, then you're the one acting in bad faith.
And there generally aren't countries that offer these same subsidy models while also allowing consumers to walk out the door with an immediately unlocked, heavily subsidized device. The underlying economics don't change just because consumer protection laws are different. If carriers are prevented from recovering the subsidy one way, they'll recover it another way, or offer a smaller subsidy to begin with.
So no, "other countries have stronger consumer protection laws" isn't really a defense of the argument.
