There is no need to use a 1/2" impact socket on any fastener smaller than than 13 mm. That's the job for a 3/8" ratchet.
There are plenty of 10mm and 12mm nuts and bolts for which the use of an impact wrench is beneficial.

Has anyone ever seen the guys on "Roadkill" use an impact socket?

The HF reviews are generally accurate. Look for stuffs with +92% recommendation.
12-point sockets will have 25 to 30% less torque capability vs. 6-points. Not a big deal since I almost always fall back to the oxy torch/cherry red heat if I need more than 350 ft-lbs of torque. You'll need 12-points if you work extensively in the aerospace industry or want
to remove a corroded/damaged fastener.
HF's roto ratchets and impact sockets have less quality control vs Snap On. I use USA Craftsman sockets, HF roto ratchets, HF impact sockets, HF 3/4" breaker bar, HF/Bauer 4 1/2" grinders, and Bremen locking pliers. Zero failure over +30 years of wrenching. Easy replacement in the remote chance of tool failure.
