For a $500 gaming pc it took about 18 months by renting out 16hr everyday. If you buy 5090 or even higher gpu, return will be much faster. But risk will be much higher too.
Considering that building a gaming PC today for $500 would consist of ddr-3 and a GeForce 780 gtx, I'm not too surprised by that.

I would recommend to buy PS5 pro for GTA, unfortunately I don't see the value to purchase XBOX this gen, hopefully they will bring a competitive product in next gen

This is car industry playbook all over again. Who remembers the car part shortages that shot up all car prices during COVID? Doubtful console/gaming industry wants to go back to the cheap hey-day.

At these prices and the expected prices for next gen consoles, we'll be having AI playing videogames for us instead.

Xbox is in shambles, closing studios monthly, no long-term plan... I like my XSX but this is an insane price for a dying platform

The PS5 is the same price, it's not just Microsoft that raised prices, and allegedly MS is losing "hundreds" on each console due to the RAM shortage, although, I'm not sure I buy that personally.
i call bs. they have contracts in place with ram makers throughout the product life cycle. pricing was already set when contracts were signed. they are just jumping on the ripoff bandwagon because others are doing the same thing.

The source of this claim is a known Microsoft fanboy who basically does PR for them with "leaks" that try to justify their business decisions, etc.
That being said, word was from a lot of places that existing contracts for DRAM were getting cancelled left and right because even with a payout fee to cancel the contract, you would still make more money redirecting the stock you have to AI datacenter buildout because they were willing to pay any price. So I find it very plausible they actually are losing money on each console. Who knows how much, though.

Console prices are insane these days for how old they are. I like how they are trying to act like the cost of making all the other pieces hasn't gone down (gpu/cpu/etc) 5-6 years after release, so when ram goes up they increase the price 1 to 1 to keep profit the same as if ram was still cheap 😒 Glad I got mine when they bottomed out on price, think it was around $280 total after buying discounted gift cards and getting my FH5 edition series X from Microsoft.

If it was using 400W those 16 hours that's $450-500 in electricity costs.

if you have no idea what you are talking about you can make up a term like "AI mining" and then it's a real thing.... step 3 .. profit
Are you Ai mining people kids living at home not paying the power bill? Or living in an apartment where you aren't paying for electricity??

I don't feel like you would make anything unless you were running a 5090, and even then it would probably take over a year to pay off the PC, assuming values didn't drop, and no equipment failures running a 5090 24/7.

I wish this stupid AI bubble would burst. How many of these data centers do they need to build before things return to normal? I need a new 500gb SATA hard drive for my security system. A Samsung 860 EVO in that size cost me $50 on November 27, 2020. The 870 EVO equivalent is now close to $300!
