The Canon EOS R5 body is still a capable high end full frame camera, especially for wildlife, sports, and shooters who want 8K video, a higher resolution sensor, a high resolution EVF, and a weather sealed magnesium build. The $2599 price is matched at B and H, and similar money can sometimes buy refurbished or bundled alternatives with extras. The main drawbacks are its age, the closed RF lens ecosystem, and video limits like 8K overheating, no open gate, and only modest gains versus newer bodies such as the R6 III. It remains most compelling when those specific R5 features matter.

  • The Adorama bundle can effectively add a control ring adapter and a 128GB CFexpress Type-B card to the R5 body purchase.

  • Canon refurbished pricing can lower the EOS R5 body cost to $2,339.00 or $2,105.10 after a phone call discount.

  • The R5 can still be a strong choice when 8K capture is required for wildlife or sports work.

  • The R5 can hold value well because camera generations often improve incrementally rather than with major leaps.

  • The RF lens ecosystem can limit options because Canon discourages third-party RF-mount lenses.

  • The R5 can overheat during 8K recording at up to 30 fps and may require long cooling time.

  • The R5 may be a poor fit for video-heavy use because it lacks open-gate and has sub-par dynamic range versus alternatives.

  • The R5 body price can feel overpriced for what it delivers, with better value suggested from investing in a stronger lens instead.

I am considering a used D750 or 6D as my first DSLR, after taking photos with a D750 I was very impressed.

I already have a flagship phone camera so I need something that gets me to the next level, and I felt the D750 got me there.

Are there any others I should consider at this level?

Because even at 6 years old it's still a fantastic camera. Cameras aren't like most consumer electronics. They hold their value extremely well because there aren't huge jumps in advancement between most generations. You aren't going to get something better without a decent price jump and even then, how much better depends on exactly what you're doing with it and will most likely be incremental.
For the same/similar price, I'd get the newer R6 iii or R6V 10/10 times. If you really value the slighly more resolution than already high enough resolution of R6 iii and ignore the older processor and newer niceties of R6 iii, then I guess you really know what you're doing so you do you, more power.

Please point me to the R6m3 that comes with $400 of actual useful accessories for $2600. Beyond that let's compare. Magnesium body vs magnesium frame for those in harsh conditions (personally I'd prefer a dented body that was still weather tight vs a cracked body that wasn't). Higher resolution sensor as you pointed out which is beneficial for wildlife and sports. Higher resolution EVF helps everyone. Supposedly better weather sealing. LCD top panel which some prefer and some don't. And while the R6m3 is mostly ahead in video, the R5 will shoot in 8k for those that need/want it. Otherwise, as I said, it's still a fantastic camera. That doesn't mean others aren't better but, like I said, you're looking at a decent jump (10%+ in this case) and whether it's actually an improvement depends on what you're doing with it. Personally, the prices of this R5 or the R6m3 are still too high for me to consider swapping for my r6m2. Your and my opinion of the price vs other cameras FOR OUR USES doesn't make this a bad price. For those that need/want the features of the R5, the R6m3 isn't going to cut it even if the prices were actually the same. They'd have to jump a lot to the R5m2. That is what makes this still a good deal. Someone that needs/wants a 3/4 ton diesel to tow with isn't getting a bad deal just because a 1/2 ton gas truck is cheaper and more comfortable and can still tow some lighter stuff.

used a7iii for about $200 more than used D750 at around $600 or used a7ii with IBIS. You can definitely save $200 in equivalent e mount lenses. Bad F mount glasses are really cheap now but good ones are still expensive and not worth their price compared to much better e mount options.

The a7iii is awesome I just hardly see it under $1,000 for body only, while D750 and 6D are available for $500 all day. I see some a7 iii sold for sub $700 on eBay, but always by sellers with zero feedback.

R6 iii does 7K 60 RAW and 7K 30 Open gate and has much better dynamic range. R5 can't do open gate, sub par DR, does 8k but only at max 30 fps and overheats easily while doing so. The resolution jump is practically insignificant to many, especially considering the limitations. Top LCD screen again is a very niche thing. Most professionals these days use Sony A1 mkii or A7Rvi or such and none of them have top screens but its a must for you, I'm happy for you. And regarding the body, I'm sure canon claims R5 is better built but I've used them both and felt confident with both. They are both weather sealed. I'm not sure whether full Magnesium body of R5 is a pro considering how easily it overheats and how long it takes to cool down which was my #1 pain point when I used it. Even with all that said, I'm sure there will be dozen or so people for whom R5 fits better and those people know exactly what they want. My comment is for everyone else. If it were my friend, I'd caution against R5 at this price especially if they use it for video more than 10% of the time. But at $1500, have at it all day.

Be aware that you are also choosing a mostly closed RF lens system with this camera. Canon doesn't like third parties making lenses.
Canon has a full line of great cameras. Some are excellent, using the same processor, so you get nearly all the same features for much less.
If you don't already KNOW you want a camera like this, perhaps you've used the Point-n-Shoot cameras, you'll need to spend many hours learning all the options, what they do, how to use them best, and probably end up spending $5000 on a few lenses to get your money's worth from this camera.
I own 3 Canon cameras. One has the DIGIC X Image Processor. For this type of money, you probably want to look at SONY, Nikon, and some OM System cameras too.
R5 Review - https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/...-r5-review - it is 6 yrs old. Seems lots of professional photographers LOVE this camera. The R6 and R8 are the value and budget full frame Canon options.
If you don't need a full frame sensor, then Canon has the APS-C sensor R cameras too. R7, R10, R50, R50 V, and the R100. These all use the RF lens mount, so you can spend $1000-$2000 less than the R5, get the lenses you need, before spending the price of a high school junk car on the R5 on sale. When picking lenses, beware that Canon and a few 3rd party lens makers to make APS-C specific lenses for the RF mount. These are smaller and may not (probably aren't) what you want if your intention is to start with the smaller APS-C sensor, then move to a full-frame sensor later. When you go with a cheaper camera, there are trade-offs. If the missing features aren't important to you and your style of photography, does it matter?
I have to say, I've be very impressed with the image quality of my $500 R50 using a $770 Sigma 16-300mm f/3.5-6.7 DC OS Contemporary lens for almost all daytime shooting. Canon does sell a "nifty 50" prime RF lens for $200, but that's about the end of the good deals. You can always drop to Rokinon, Tamron, TTArtisan, and Brighten Star lenses to save a little money. The last two often are manual focus only, which can be fine ... or not, depending on the photographer and subject.
Full frame lenses are seldom small. Beware. The size of the sensor drives the size of the lens for the aperture and focal length we all want.
Remember the old days when they said your speakers should be 3x the price of your amp in a stereo system to get the quality of sound? Perhaps lenses should be 3x the price of your camera to get the qualify of images you want as well.

Secondipity.com has it in stock at $999 for a long time, get a new account with 10% coupon and it is $900 no tax charged for like new product. Things may not be ideal with the seller but it is official liquidator and returns were easy. Due to stupid official prices on old sony cameras, there are people listing stupid prices and people paying stupid prices. I don't think you will get no response if you list your $800 offer in reddit photomarket, fred miranda etc.

Thanks for all your advice.

To be fair I think the Sony punches above its weight, they put a lot of features into that camera that makes it appeal to a wider audience. 4K video and mirrorless alone put it into a different league, I think the used premium just reflects its longevity.

The Sony is definitely a better camera but I don't see myself getting double the value especially with the risk of me not sticking with the hobby.

I would be afraid of getting locked into the Canon ecosystem. They don't allow 3rd party lens makers to make lenses for their RF mount.
