AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

From Wharton professor and author of the popular One Useful Thing Substack newsletter Ethan Mollick comes the definitive playbook for working, learning, and living in the new age of AI

Something new entered our world in November 2022 — the first general purpose AI that could pass for a human and do the kinds of creative, innovative work that only humans could do previously. Wharton professor Ethan Mollick immediately understood what ChatGPT meant: after millions of years on our own, humans had developed a kind of co-intelligence that could augment, or even replace, human thinking. Through his writing, speaking, and teaching, Mollick has become one of the most prominent and provocative explainers of AI, focusing on the practical aspects of how these new tools for thought can transform our world.

In Co-Intelligence, Mollick urges us to engage with AI as co-worker, co-teacher, and coach. He assesses its profound impact on business and education, using dozens of real-time examples of AI in action. Co-Intelligence shows what it means to think and work together with smart machines, and why it's imperative that we master that skill.

Mollick challenges us to utilize AI's enormous power without losing our identity, to learn from it without being misled, and to harness its gifts to create a better human future. Wide ranging, hugely thought-provoking, optimistic, and lucid, Co-Intelligence reveals the promise and power of this new era.

This is way dated at this point. Better to follow his blog.

This still might be useful if you run smaller models locally and live on a boat. I'll hold out for free Prime day discounts.

Agreed. Listened to the audiobook this year. This is a trend moving too quickly for traditional books to keep up with outside of vague generalities.

Summary of Co-Intelligence

Co-Intelligence: Living and Working with AI (April 2024) by Ethan Mollick is a practical guide on integrating Large Language Models (LLMs) into daily workflows. The book's central thesis is that AI should be treated as an "alien mind" or partner rather than a mere tool. Mollick outlines four core rules for users:
  1. Invite AI in: Use it for everything to find its capabilities.
  2. Be the human in the loop: Verify all outputs; AI hallucinates.
  3. Treat AI like a person: Use personas and natural language for better results.
  4. Assume this is the worst AI you'll ever use: Prepare for rapid capability growth.
The book introduces the concept of the "Jagged Frontier," the uneven boundary where AI excels at some complex tasks while failing at simple ones, requiring users to experiment constantly to find value. Mollick argues for a "centaur" model (clear division of labor) or "cyborg" model (deep integration) to boost productivity in education and business.

How the Book Is Outdated (as of June 2026)

In June 2026, exactly two years after publication, Ethan Mollick himself acknowledged that the book's framework is becoming obsolete. In a June 4, 2026 post titled "Co-Existence and the End of Co-Intelligence," Mollick stated that while the book isn't entirely "out-of-date," it was written for a "world of chatbots" that no longer exists.
The primary limitations of the 2024 text in the current 2026 landscape include:
  • Shift from Chatbots to Agents: The book focuses on prompting chatbots for cooperative, back-and-forth tasks. However, late 2025 saw the release of autonomous AI agents capable of self-directed work. Recent data indicates AI now writes 80% of code at Anthropic, with developers shipping 8x more code, a shift from the "co-worker" model to one of oversight for autonomous systems.
  • Capability Mismatch: The book's examples rely on models that struggled with basic math and logic. By 2026, AI models are winning gold medals at the International Math Olympiad and handling complex, multi-step professional tasks in medicine and law that were previously impossible.
  • The End of "Co-Intelligence": Mollick argues the era of "co-intelligence" (humans and AI working as equals) is ending, replaced by "Co-Existence." The new challenge is no longer just collaboration, but living alongside systems that are sometimes significantly smarter than humans, requiring a new framework for maintaining human agency and purpose.
Mollick is addressing these gaps in his upcoming sequel, Co-Existence: The Next Phase of AI, scheduled for release in October 2026, which serves as a field guide for this new era of autonomous, super-human-capable AI.

Looks like the author's views changed to alarmist. Until AI stops routinely making stupid mistakes, ceases to be obstinate about correcting them, and believes obviously wrong things to most humans based on faulty input, I'm not inclined to think it is very 'intelligent'. Maybe alarmism was thought to sell books.
Not buying. I missed the sale on nvidia's history.
