This is a great deal if you need a really basic five-port switch. These are pretty solid and there's not a lot to go wrong with them. However, I would suggest that you spend the extra $15 and get the eight port smart switch that is also on sale. It's a better product with more features, and given the long lifetime of these types of devices, you really won't feel the stinging of the extra money in a few years.

This is fantastic if you need to put it in a small space or know that you are only ever going to connect a couple of devices, but for most people you're better off with the 8 port switch.

i know it's the standard way these things are made, but for home use I kind of hate that the power input is on the back and the ethernet ports are on the front.
Like... that makes sense if you're putting it in a server rack or something. but for most people who are setting it up in their homes it would be much more convenient if all the ports were in the back with the lights on the front.
it's a minor nit-pick, but it annoys me

edit: upon closer inspection it appears that the power port is on the side. somewhat better, but still not ideal

It's not a PoE switch. Shouldn't need much power at all.

That's good because the stated max power consumption already exceeds the power supply capacity as-is.

I would buy this instead, also a TP-Link, also a lightning deal for $17.99, but this one has additional features like VLAN support:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N0OHEMA/

Also looks like it adds basic things like connection status lights on the ports.

Remember to log into its web server when you first unbox it and update the firmware from the tp-link US website.

edit: Just noticed this one is actually only $7.99 on deal. I still would buy something a litlte nicer, this one is absolutely barebones.

Finally. I've been waiting for a good deal on a switch that shoots blue laser beams out of its ports for what seems like forever now.

I put this in the main living room where I have 4 devices, I paid $10 and it takes 1-2W max. That is why I like it doesn't draw much power and its fit for use as a distribution switch. This is not meant for a lab device, VLAN, etc which will take significantly more power and require more features. Its just a simple switch, low power, no frills, no firmware. You plug it in and forget about it for 15 years. In contrast my more feature rich Mikrotik distro switch takes 22W 24/7 which costs $$$ in electricity per year. Fit for purpose./...

100% agree on the port lights. I will only buy switches that have the ports on the back and the port light indicators on the front. This is the design exception, though. Most have the lights next to the actual ports.

Don't buy network devices from this brand as all data will be sent to China and they have capacities to access devices remotely
