I disagree. I started taking fish oil after my triglycerides were high on a routine blood panel. The ONLY thing I changed was started taking the supplement. The last two blood panels have been flawless.

I normally don't respond to trollish posts on here, but as a dude with heart disease I feel compelled to scold you. People like you can have whatever opinions you have, but to actively spread medical info and advice that you're likely not qualified to give is a whole other thing. Maybe you put so little value in your own info that you're comfortable spreading it, thinking "It won't hurt. Who's gonna listen anyway?". Maybe you're someone who insists they just know everything. Maybe you truly believe that a 12 year old "study" is the end-all/be-all when it comes to fish oil supplements. Maybe you just wanna be an edgy internet dweller, going against the grain. I dunno. Whatever the case may be, you're doing the internet a disservice by insistently yapping on here. My cardiologist, my cardiothoracic surgeon, my PCP, the multiple PA's and NP's I've had the privilege of visiting with since my 2025 surgery...they all disagree with you.

So...go elsewhere, K? Thanks.

Dosing with supplements isn't regulated the same way as with medications (in the US). For most minerals/vitamins (aside from a daily multi), you should consult your Dr to ensure proper dosing to address your specific deficiencies/needs.

Great price so if they do nothing no harm no foul
Whether it can do harm would depend. If you have certain cardiovascular risks, e.g. elevated triglycerides, fish oil supplementation is indicated. However, recent research shows that in healthy individuals, fish oil supplementation may increase the risk of atrial fibrillation. Eating fatty fish, however, does not increase the risk. We currently do not recommend fish oil for healthy individuals. And those that do take it should only do so under the advice of a physician. It might also help to self-monitor for atrial fibrillation, e.g. with the ECG function of a smartwatch.

PS - a study from last month suggests that fish oil supplements may actually accelerate cognitive decline in older adults.

I disagree with your statement Strongest evidenceFish oil (especially the omega-3s DHA and EPA) is important because DHA is a major structural component of the brain. People who eat more fish tend to have a lower risk of cognitive decline as they age.
The consumption of fatty fish is indeed associated with cognitive health. But several studies have shown that fish oil supplementation does not have the same effect. The latest negative results were published just a week ago. It was a great study because they measured actual DHA levels in cerebrospinal fluid. They found that DHA levels did rise after taking fish oil so it was presumably reaching the brain. Yet they found no difference in cognitive performance or brain volume versus placebo.

Worst, this study from last month showed that fish oil supplements ACTUALLY ACCELERATED COGNITIVE DECLINE in older adults.

Similarly, there isn't much cardiovascular benefit in healthy adults. Because of that, and because it may increase the risk of atrial fibrillation and bleeding, we do not recommend fish oil supplements for healthy individuals.

Here's the latest negative study:

FALSE, Google AI breakdown from Mayo Clinic, "Fish oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) which are essential for reducing inflammation, supporting brain function, and maintaining heart health. It is particularly effective for significantly lowering triglyceride levels and easing joint stiffness associated with conditions like rheumatoid arthritis."
You/Google are covering too many topics in too few words resulting in misleading conclusions. The major problem is that you confuse natural fish oil with fish oil supplements. Studies reveal that there may be pharmacological differences between the two.

1) Yes, supplements have been shown to reduce inflammation, so it may be effective for joint health.

2) While eating fatty fish is associated with brain health, multiple studies show that supplements have no cognitive benefits over placebo. The latest study was published just last week.
https://news.keckmedicine.org/fis...d-decline/

Alarmingly, this study from last month showed that fish oil supplements ACTUALLY ACCELERATED COGNITIVE DECLINE in older adults.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/sci...0726000932

3) Once again, eating fatty fish is good for cardiovascular health but supplements don't seem to do much for healthy individuals. For people with cardiovascular risks, e.g. high triglycerides, prescription doses do show benefits. But fish oil supplements may increase the risk of atrial fibrilation, stroke and bleeding. In other words, it may actually harm the heart. For that reason and the questionable benefits, we do not recommend fish oil supplements to healthy patients.
Here's one study associating fish oil supplements with atrial fibrillation:
https://www.bhf.org.uk/informatio...upplements

Botton line: If you have cardiovascular risks, take fish oil under the supervision of a physician. If you're healthy, there is no reason to take it and it may even harm you.

One of the first things I teach med students is to clearly define the populations being studied. You belong to the population of people with heart disease. Most people reading this belong to the population of people without heart disease. You simply cannot extrapolate your results to healthy people.

Indeed, the latest research shows that fish oil supplements have little benefit for healthy people. In fact, they may even increase the risk for atrial fibrilation stroke and bleeding. However, in people with heart disease and existing atrial fibrilation, the opposite is true. Fish oil supplements decrease mortality and morbidity.

So yes, fish oil supplements do benefit you as a heart patient. But they may actually harm healthy people. You can check what I say with your "cardiologist, cardiothoracic surgeon, PCP, the multiple PA's and NP's."

Alarmingly, this study from last month showed that fish oil supplements actually INCREASED THE RISK OF ALZHEIMER'S IN OLDER ADULTS.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/sci...0726000932

Bottom line: Because of the mixed results, limited benefits and possible risks, healthy people should get their fish oil from eating fish and not supplements.

From the study:
Quote :
Conclusions
Omega-3 supplementation may be associated with accelerated cognitive decline in older adults, potentially through adverse effects on cerebral synaptic function rather than classical AD proteinopathies. These findings challenge the prevailing view of omega-3 as uniformly beneficial and highlight the need for a cautious reassessment of its widespread use for cognitive protection.

It's nuanced. Many older studies do show cognitive and cardiovascular benefits. But many newer studies do not. And worst, some newer studies show adverse effects, most notably the increased risk for atrial fibrillation. One study from last month even suggests that fish oil supplements accelerated cognitive decline in older patients. Go to my prior posts to see the links.

Current peer-reviewed studies do not indicate the use of fish oil supplements in healthy people. The cognitive and cardiovascular benefits are questionable and the risks may outweigh any benefits. One study from last month even suggests that fish oil supplements accelerates cognitive decline in older adults.

Go to my previous posts for links to the studies.

SkillfulPiranha, thank you for your posts. That is a more reasonable response than the earlier person, as you at least explained and backed up your statements. I'll read them when I have more time.

For myself, with autoimmune joint issues, fishoil reduced my joint pain to almost non-existent , and I was able to stop much stronger pharmaceuticals that had dangerous side effects . I'm living proof, that for SOME individuals, this stuff is amost magic.

Real fish, especially salmon, several times a week might be the best, but that is not practical or affordable for all. That's where these pills come in.
