After getting the phone and paying it off fully, make some calls/texts and make sure it shows up on ATT account
You will need to wait 24 hours or the next day for the unlock portal to sync the pay off information.
Transfer the eSIM to an unlocked (or ATT locked) iphone or android. For iphone to iphone you can use iOS transfer eSIM method. For iphone to android, you can first to see if you can generate a QR code for eSIM and then use it on android for transfer. If that fails follow the instructions here https://www.att.com/support/artic...ce=4485
Make some calls with that phone and make sure it shows up on the account now.
Now go to ATT.com/device unlock and select non ATT customer and provide imei.
Make sure you reply yes to the confirmation email ATT sends
Only cancel the account after you are able to unlock.
Some other things to note
ATT will send you a bill with the full amount even after you cancel your account so you have to do couple of things to get rid of charges.
1. When you open the bill in myATT app/att website there will be something called "Don't recognize this fee" under the activation. You can click on it to get rid of a activation fee. This is an instant and automatic credit. Also this works even if you cancelled the account after 3 days.
2. Chat with CS to get rid of rest of the charges. Make sure to not fall for credit in the next bill/adjusted in the next bill, Be polite but persistent that you want charges to be credited now. Bring up the policy if you have to.

You can't unlock your device until your installment plan is paid off. If you pay off your device as part of your monthly bill, wait until the start of your next bill period to unlock it.
Want to pay off your device early? Make sure your number has been active on the device for at least 60 days. Then, sign into your account to review and pay off your installment plan. Wait 48 hours after you make your final payment to submit a new unlock request.
