Now I will consider my next options:
1. Stay with Metro for 3 months to get $100 gift card. Essentially paying $100 for two months of service with $100 back on a GC.
2. Just trade it in to Apple ASAP along with my current ip13 for a new unlocked 17e....then get whatever $15-20/service has hotspot included while I wait on black friday deals
3. Just use it the month I paid for it and then stick it in a drawer. in 11 more months i'd have an unlocked iphone as a backup that I would have essentially paid $138 - $20 (value of first month service that i currently need...may be useless to some not needing service right now) = $118
Still have about 2 months on another prepaid plan
Just checked apple's website and trade-in value is $310...can someone confirm that Apple will accept locked phones?

General Device Unlock Requirements
If you have a Cricket phone, it may have been programmed with a lock that prevents it from operating with other compatible wireless networks. Cricket will unlock your device upon request, if you have met the following unlocking requirements:
The device you want to unlock has been active for at least 365 days of paid service on that device.
The device is designed for use on and is locked to Cricket's network.
The device has not been reported lost or stolen.
The device is not associated with a fraudulent account.
Wow! Used to be 6 months for an unlock! Guess I couldn't even unlock my old iphone se (2nd gen).
Not as good as i thought it would be but you only pay for 1 month of the highest tier service.
Will take this 16e ($310 trade in) and my mom's current ip13 ($205 trade in) and trade them in at apple for an unlocked 17e. Total out of pocket to get her in the 17e will be around $168 + $90 + her current 13. I have other gift cards i got 50% off so really about an additional $45 or $213 in total.
will then put her on a $180ish yearly plan. So $180 + $168 =$348.00 for a new iphone and service.
Will hopefully rinse and repeat a similar cost offer in 2 more years (been replacing phones about every 2 years with these offers...family has went from iphone 6s, 7, 8, xR, 11, 13 and now 16/17e. new phones 2-3 years behind the latest greatest iphones are fine with me.
Why don't you just sign up for a new bank account and get the $325 bonus there and just pay outright for the phone?
