A "Hey I just watched a movie" thread

One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) Big Grin

I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)

So what have you folks watched recently?

It's one of those spambots that quotes a previous post.

I think he was responding to the post above his about The Secret World of Arrietty. It's an animated version of The Borrowers, which has been done several times. The best is the original with Eddie Albert (of Green Acres fame) but I could be prejudiced since that's the one I saw as a kid.

"My Week With Marilyn" – I was expecting a lot better. It kind of got repetitive, and there wasn't all that much substance to it, IMO. 2/5

"Take Shelter" – Thanks Foreveryours. Really tense and dark. The lead totally should have gotten some Oscar attention for this. This director really doesn't like cheery plots (his other one "Shotgun Stories" was also pretty bleak.) 4/5

"Red Dog" – Pretty cute and clever. Forrest Gump as a dog. 3/5

"Bullhead" – A really bleak but beautifully shot crime/criminal drama film that's up for an Oscar. The subject matter was different, but it reminded me a bit of "A Prophet" (and "Gomorrah" to a lesser extent) 3.5/5

While they aren't movies, I watched Cheap Trick at Budokan and the second season of Eastbound & Down. I could totally pull off one of those El Flama Blanco suits. Yeah baby.

Bucky Larson ... funnier than expected actually.

Sunset Limited ... good, interesting ... but didn't match the hype.

"Flowers of War" - A Chinese movie starring Batman! I like the stuff this director puts out. Very good. 3.5/5

"Phoebe in Wonderland" - I didn't care much for it. 2/5

I didnt listen to the reviews...I had an open mind...and took my son to ...Ghost Rider...OMG It is truly the first movie that I wanted to ask for our money back!!

I mean there were some scenes that they had no background on the animated stuff..just white..they try to pass it off as artistic..but seriously someone just got lazy and thought yeah we need an image of him just spinning around on a white background WTF!!!!

The only interesting character was the Decay guy...he was funnier and his power was wait for it....Decaying stuff!!! YEAH!!! When my son said to some school friends he saw in lobby.."Ghost Rider sucked!!" I was proud of him...he recognized crap when he saw it too!!!!

"The Escapist" - A kind of cool take on the standard prison breakout movie. It was a bit convoluted as it switches timelines quite a bit, but it wrapped up nicely at the end. Pretty good. 3/5.

Yesterday was Son's Day (my son's half-birthday), so I was a bad parent and broke him out of school after lunch and (at his request) we saw Star Wars: Episode I- The Phantom Menace 3D (1999/2012). I really tried to go into this wanting to like it, but the movie is just so uneven from start to finish. Too many kid parts, but then you have too much politics, which almost caused us both to drop off. If Naboo and its inhabitants had been cooler, that would have helped matters. To quote my son "At least we got the bad one out of the way!".

Then last night we finished off Ghost Rider (2007). I won't call it a great movie by any means, but after suffering through TPM it was an improvement. I liked Ghost Rider more than I did when I saw it at the theater way back in 2007.

His birthday is 8/28, so we celebrate his half birthday on 2/28. He is officially 9.5! It is basically an excuse for us to have fun and be slightly irresponsible. bounce
