A "Hey I just watched a movie" thread

12,438 1,117 April 23, 2010 at 06:49 PM
One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) Big Grin

I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)

So what have you folks watched recently?

Iagree It just didn't feel right. A friend of mine says it is spot-on with Thor's story, so he appreciated it because of that, but it was just too cheesey or something for me... The romance of the story felt forced and silly.
Lovely sets and some decent fight scenes, though (my favorite being with the fire-breathing armor near the end). I could believe Chris Hemsworth as Thor, but I couldn't believe the emotional journey he was supposed to be going through; that seemed like just going through the motions and reading the lines without ever feeling them.

The romantic chemistry was minimal at best. Not quite as bad as a lot of action movies where the romance seems to have been stapled on as an afterthought because, well, there just has to be a romantic element in there *somewhere*. At least it was more-or-less integrated into the film. I do think Jane Foster hurriedly hiding the dirty dishes was a good touch.

My favorite part was when all his friends show up in the town near the end. It's predictable, but I never get tired of that kind of scene. It fits my sense of humor.

On the cinematic romance front, I'd say the most complete and utter failure of on-screen chemistry I've seen in a long time was the supposed relationship between Shia LaBeouf and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in "Transformers, Dark of the Moon." Despite their being cast as a romantic couple, the two of them acted like they'd never met before the camera started rolling and didn't particularly like having to stay in the same room together all the way through to "Cut!"

But it had big explosions, so that's something. I think the best performance in that film was by "Driller," because he could eat entire office buildings and still maintain a trim figure. I'm sure we could all draw some sort of inspiration from that.

When I saw the commercial, I didn't know if Channing Tatum was the guy or the girl.
If he hadn't played Duke in GI Joe, I would have never heard of him.

I use Thor as further proof of how George Lucas is the worst "successful" director ever. Bear with me.

OK, so the chemistry isn't quite there with Thor and his lady friend, and it is kind of weird how it comes up so late in the story that it seems it has to be rushed so that in the end, it makes sense how a level headed scientist would do anything for this guy.
Ahem, anywho, there's the rushed romance, the middling to ok chemistry, and a love story that takes a back seat to action - and STILL Natalie Portman manages to give looks and smiles and reactions that make her girlish and mushy around this guy while still being passable for sciency, etc.

And somehow, in the Star Wars movies, she's made of cardboard. It's almost mastery that you can take an actress like that and dumb her down so much she just caves and says "fark it" to get through the horrendously cheesy scenes she has.

Prosecution rests.

Maybe she's just a better actor now than she was during Star Wars. Dontknow

Won't find much argument from me about George Lucas' dialogue skills, though.

No, long before Star Wars she did Leon and Heat. She was great in Heat, but amazing in Leon - and she was only 13 then.

Here are the last three movies I watched:

Alien (1979): I ordered the BD 4-disc set and I am looking forward to seeing the other films again. Can't wait for Prometheus (sp?)!

Robinson Crusoe (1954): No idea how the book was, but he had some relatively posh arrangements in the movie. Nevertheless, it was very good. It also game me a good excuse to order the card game Friday. Woot!

Island of Lost Souls (1932): This was an adaptation of the book The Island of Dr. Moreau. Bela Lugosi was one of the manimals, but I wouldn't have known it without help from the credits. Charles Laughton was great as usual.

Next up, some silent Harold Lloyd and Laurel & Hardy shorts. Fun fun!

Rise of The Planet of The Apes - Facepalm They lost me at a research scientist {spoiler} being shocked by the pregnancy of the ape. In research with regular blood panels being done they would have detected elevated hormone levels. Talk about dumbing things down for today's audiences.

What do you expect, it was filmed in Canada.

Canadians also think it rains non stop in Seattle, like it does in The Killing.

Castaway on the Moon 6/10 Just like Tom Hanks on the island but set in Korea with subtitles! Instead of plane crash, it is a result of his own doing. And there is a Girl!! Quirky and heartfelt...

:spoiler: Oh and if you dont like poop well lets just say..there is a bit in this movie...
