This refurbished 14TB Toshiba enterprise drive is aimed at cheap bulk storage, but the current price sits well above past refurb pricing. The drive itself has a strong reliability track record in long running NAS and server setups, with examples of multi drive arrays running 24 7 for years and clean SMART health on a recent unit. Warranty support has also been handled through RMA for replacement. The main drawback is value, since similar drives were bought far cheaper before, and one drive from the seller failed after a little over a year with no warranty.

Just got one of these via Amazon from spd. Same price, 6 years uptime, 30 power cycles, 29 emergency head parks (power loss). 0 bad sectors.

Wish I could get a better deal for storing my Linux distribution archive, but sadly here we are.

They were never $10/TB. You were lucky to find an 8TB on sale for $99 at the trough of low HDD pricing. The average price was always around $20/TB
Search SlickDeals for "goharddrive". The first 3 results show ~$10/TB:
Going just a bit further down the list there are even better deals. Some even better than $7/TB:
I personally made the jump to RAIDZ2 (RAID6) because of the pricing. I went with 5x12TB, and I spent less than $80 per drive. At current pricing, replacing one drive will cost almost as much as the whole array. Plus, a few years ago it was common to get 3 or even 5 year warranties on these refurbished drives.

Perhaps you are confusing the pricing of new consumer drives with used enterprise ones? I wouldn't argue with you about $100 for a new 8TB drive. But this deal is for refurbished enterprise drives.

I had a drive fail from this company recently. Last a little over a year. No warranty.
I have a server running with 8 x Seagate 14Tb Drives, 8 x Seagate 18Tb drives, all bought from ServerPartDeals. They've been running 24/7 for the last 3+ years without a single failure or issue. I figure for the price I paid, when one goes down, it's absolutely worth not paying the ridiculous amounts for them new.

Man I got 3x 12TB drives in '24 for $240 total on a slick deal. this is sad.
Yeah. I managed to snag 3x 12TB drives for $200 total. At the time I didn't really need the space so I thought it might have been a mistake. Now I'm very happy I did because I definitely have enough NAS space for the foreseeable future.

Also did the sub-$80 12tb recertified enterprise drives. Got 8 of them, which left me with 4 empty slots across my NAS and backup-NAS. Planned to fill those at some point in the future, but that future now seems bleak.

Not urgent for me, yet, but my GF backs up to external drives. She last went from 12tb to 20tb, and is staring down spending $600+ to not have to split the 20tb backup's backup between 12tb and 4tb externals.

So we're basically forced to having to resort to scraps as in "refurbished" drives which are less affordable than the ones that were brand new before this whole RAMpocalypse took shape...

those are outliers for used, scrap, or EOL refurb drives. The $10/TB standard was not ever the norm for even low end new HDD's.

You replied to a comment that said "these" used to be $10/tb. "These" refers to the OP's deal, which is for seller-refurbished, working, tested HDDs.

Nobody in this thread has been talking about new HDDs but you, and you didn't specify you were talking about new HDDs in your original comment.
