Rumor for fall lineup is iPhone 18 pro, 18 pro max, and ultra (fold). The 18 pro could start at $1299 ($200 increase from last year). 18, 18e, and Air 2 is rumored for spring. Let's hope they don't increase the price of the 17 but if so, this may not be a bad deal if you don't mind the single camera and smaller battery compared to the 17 which is $20 cheaper (pre-announcement).

phones are even more affordable (nearly free with certain deals) if you don't mind being 2-4 years behind the "latest and greatest" tech.

as a nice bonus -- i don't have the pressure of keeping up with/not breaking a $800-1500 device. yeah i know there's stuff like applecare, but i don't want to pay for that on top of the phone cost.

yes you can get the expensive phones "free" from carriers but i hate the feeling of being locked in to anything years.

One of the best ways to manage it is to just get into a plan that costs less than the cost to upgrade. I pay $40 a line (including tax/fees) for one of Tmobile's top unlimited plans and they give us $1,000 toward new phones every 2 years. The cost of my service over 2 years is less than the price of the newest iPhone, so everyone on my plan is essentially buying an iPhone every other year and getting cell service for free.

That, or just hack free lines/SIMs and then get whatever phone you want.

The T-Mobile plans always confuse me and so I've always stuck with prepaid. Is your plan retired for new signups. I see their experience more 2.0 plan for $170 for 4 lines + taxes and fees, with upgrades every 3 years. At this cost, prepaid seems a lot cheaper and less hassle. US Mobile at $25/mo (or cheaper if you pay annually) is a great deal. I'm currently on Total Wireless at $30/mo and I get free Disney+ no ads, which I would've been paying $18+ for anyway ... and I get unlimited priority data and unlimited tethering.
