For those in the Ubiquiti network ecosystem, B&H has the 5 port 2.5GB Ubiquiti managed L2 switch at $52. Various coupons and such can take it to $50. For one management interface and such, I think it's worth the extra few bucks.

Basically, if you have to ask that question, then it is safe in your home network--because you wouldn't be using the tools you can use in a managed switch. (Note: I am in the same boat as you--and use all unmanaged switches on my home network...so I am not trying to be mean or offensive.)

do we have to be concerned about security when using unmanaged switches? I mesn you don't know what it is doing with your info. Maybe I am getting paranoid these days.

A switch is a repeater - it just sends signals to the right place on another of its' ports based on the MAC addresses that it knows about. That's literally all it can do. There's no security principle involved here. Any network thing anywhere, in concept, can have bad actors put things into it. Typically that can be blocked at the router level (for example, in my Ubiquiti network, I block various countries and various known exploits).

I think you are overthinking this. You should be more concerned of people clicking on phishing emails than an unmanaged switch. We have a lot 5 port unmanaged switches in our company. My job as an IT manager would be easier if more people had common sense and not click every unsolicited email with links or attachments sent to them.
