The phone is a decent choice (given it's a freebie, locked for a year, and a 2024 model) -
8GB RAM
128GB + SDCARD storage
5G + 3.5mm jack + 120Hz refresh screen

It is not a flagship, but those specs make it a very decent compromise!

You have to buy one of those bring your own phone SIM kits and transfer to another phone. But in that case, this phone will probably not unlock because you need one year of active service.

By the way, Best Buy sells the BYOP Sim kits for one dollar

The major issue with this phone is the update stopped in January of next year by the time you get it unlocked you're no longer going to be receiving security or software updates

Sims are registered to phone when activated & unlock requires phone to use the original sim with new paid service for year.
Service can be moved and re-registered to a different phone (don't swap sim) but then the original phone will remain locked because it won't have had the required amount of service to qualify.

I forget about the activation rules. But I had this and the phone works for 1 year, you need to buy more time for it to continue working, I just switched to a different cheaper provider after unlocking the phone.

I've done this deal twice for an emergency phone for my kids. I had to create a new tracfone account the second time. Bought it and then used the points to buy 3 more months of service and add 1,000 texts a couple times.
At the end, I transferred the number to US Mobile light plan for $96/year. (Unlimited voice, unlimited texts, and 2GB/mo.)

Only if you do it during activation by bringing your own (current) Tracfone number. Tracfone stopped merging 2+ lines after activation when it was bought out by Verizon.
