xfinity sucks
Even if I could take advantage of this deal, I'd lose my cablecard I'm grandfathered into. If some agent there messes with my account and I lose the flag for that, I can never get it back apparently. I can't even switch to an internet package with unlimited data, I'm stuck on one with a 1.2TB cap still. I hope when the political winds change we get someone in the FCC again that will require them to support cablecards again.
In the meantime, I'm thinking about getting a secondary connection from a local fiber competitor just to avoid the cap since I do large backups and use streaming on my tv a lot more than I used to.

Verizon FiOS is offering $30/month, price lock for 3years with speeds at 300mbps/300mbps. I have the Xfinity $40/month already and will likely switch. I like that Xfinity gives out weekly rewards though. Not sure if Verizon does the same but you're also saving $120 a year by switching to Fios.

Take it if you already are with Xfinity. Call customer service first and get them to offer the deal before trying alternate person as you have to cancel and switch... it's a price lock for 5 years and you don't have to deal with them for that period. Be nice and you may get switched. You now get their cable modem + router free without the additional rent. Seems like new competitors are coming and 5 years may bring in better tech long term.

A few things to consider:

I had my own cable modem and router which paid off over the years and was rated 650Mbps. When I installed their free hw, noticed that Xfinity free wifi and mobile radios could not be switched off. Went back to my modem and could not connect. long story short, they obsoleted that model and would not let it back on even though it was working fine for 8+ years. had to go back to their hw but used my router in the hope of disabling their free wifi (did not want some crazy dude using my connection for an all-nighter). Those free wifi/mobile radios are hard wired to stay on even in bridge mode where the home wifi is disabled. Had to spend a lot of time with support before they agreed to disable it after 24 hours. it took one week!
You should be fine if this free neighborhood wifi does not bother you, or if you don't DIY.

Absolutely! I have been doing a variant of this ping pong for years now. The only issue is depending on timing you may be out of a service for a couple of days, so use your mobile hotspot during that time. The way I do this is when my promo expires, I just cancel. And my "wife" signs up for the new promo at the same address, give it a day to be safe. Some rules of engagement: 1. For wifey, use separate email and phone number. It's like a renter at your home address, billed to an individual tenant. Nothing unusual about this. 2. When you cancelled your service, you should call in separately to tech support to disconnect/remove your cable modem MAC addr whatever the WAN addr is. If you don't do this properly, your wifey cannot register the same cable modem on her account. (If you have a spare cable modem, this step is trouble free). 3. Ask for self install for your wifey's new service / new promo- Once the new service service is activated- make sure you ask for that new account number. You will need it for issues later because your original account and service will still linger on their system for a few days. Good luck!

No sale, but good price lock IF they keep that lock on it. Just moved into a new apartment building after having astound fiber for a year and was offered 1 Gig for $50 for 5 year or Quantum fiber 1 gig for $50.

Paying for the 1 Gig service, but what I receive to my desktop is only 50-60% of advertised. Rare I see a gig, but I don't want to spend the time fighting with them all night.

I tried multiple times, but eventually I just had to cancel my account and sign up as a new customer with a different email and credit card. I had to return the old equipment after they had mailed me the new one, but otherwise it wasn't that much of an inconvenience.

fark the fark off Xfinity. After my 1 yr promo, my rates doubled. $38/no for 150mbps. Absolutely bologna.

It seems everyone around has fiber but our condos ..... Shits annoying

I had the same experience too - after over 10 years with Xfinity at that Stick Out Tongue - they just flat out refused to lower the rates and when the bill went to an all time high (admittedly for 1 GB internet) I switched to AT&T fibre and was blown away by how much stronger and reliable the internet speed is and how much of the house it covers (using the modem AT&T provides and that's covered in the fee you pay for internet)... but gatsbylee you made the right call in that this will probably trigger "Come back! We'll offer you $50 a month for one gig internet!" like xfinity's doing right now for new customers, I got a similar "come back for $50 a month one gigabit" emails and letters (which I will ignore until and if AT&T raises their rates to the point where I have to) .. with AT&T (if they offer fibre in your area) there's a chance they'll offer you a visa gift card high as $200 BUT .. this is important.. you have to sign up online WITHOUT talking to a live agent or they don't give it to you ....

(I learned this the hard way Stick Out Tongue after having the AT&T rep I called - same ph# for AT&T in general like their tech support or billing so you know it's legit the AT&T company - and AT&T sales rep flat out lied, "Oh sure you can get the $200 visa gift card no you don't have to sign up online, yes we'll knock 20 percent off the internet bill if you have AT&T cell phone service" - they knock $20 not 20 percent off and that's ONLY if you have prepaid cell phone not prepaid cell phone service like we do.... but to their credit AT&T did give me the $200 visa prepaid gift card after all it only took fourteen - I kid you not 14 Stick Out Tongue - phone calls to get it done .. had I signed up online no issues... if Xfinity is offering gift cards or what not be careful and read the fine print that will probably also be "only if you sign up online without talking to a live rep" and for pete's sake ignore their constant upselling of mobile service like the plague! I've seen bitter complaints online about additional fees they hit you with for the so called "free" mobile phone)
