Isn't the more cost-effective solution, that is adequate, buying a 90-degree adapter for a regular drill? Are there truly strategic advantages with this type of drill?

Overall footprint of this is a lot smaller than a drill with a 90 degree in the chuck. I have the dewalt 90 that has a flexible shaft and gives you a little room from the driver, but it's pretty cumbersome to use on a regular basis. This is what you want to be using if you're an electrician spending your days pulling wire through studs or joists on a finished property

Plus have to hold the 90 deg adapter from dropping down initially.

Agree, and if you chuck-in a regular drill bit you can insert it all the way back into the chuck for even more clearance. I had this tool in the 18v NiCad and didn't use it as much as I assumed so gave it to my neighbor. I also have the Milwaukee M12 version but again I don't use that much. Found some 1/4" insert "short length bits" on Amazon and use them more often with my stubby impact.
