Lyca Mobile stands out for very cheap plans with usable data, especially for a second line or a number you do not rely on every day. The 18GB plan is described as fast enough for everyday use, and after the high speed data is gone, speeds reportedly drop to about 3 Mbps, which still works well. Taxes are low, and the online account can show the account number and transfer PIN for porting. The main drawbacks are recurring billing and support headaches, with reports of blocked payments, slow replies, and difficult port outs that can put a number at risk.

Sounds like a great option, but after thinking about it, Calls and Text only won't work for people who use MAPS, Android Auto, or CarPlay often. Need continuous data while driving. I use it Android Auto everytime I drive. Not only does it help with police speed traps, but it does show me the speed limit on roads, which is helpful.
IMO it's far more helpful when it comes to traffic...I've gotten burned by that a couple times on longer trips. Admittedly I would like that functionality all the time, but for me it's worth saving the money.

worst company ever. I had auto pay off and confirmed off and they charged me two months after. They ignored FCC complaint for refund.

I've heard that Lyca's customer service is among the worst and that it can be extremely difficult to transfer your number out once you're done with them. I'm thinking of getting Lyca for my elderly relative for about 12 months, then transferring the number to US Mobile. Has anyone here done this? What was your experience?
Is it worth the potential hassle, or would you just go directly with another carrier even if it costs a little more?
Unless you're considering to stay with them forever, do not ever touch Lyca even with a ten feet pole. I have jumped ship countless times between us mobile, mint, cricket, Google Fi with no problems. Lyca was the only one who really made me consider abondoning my phone number. It's not that their customer service is incapable, the company is malicious, and does their best that you can't leave them. Happy to tell about my experience in more detail if anyone wants to hear.

Nope, that is not true anymore. Just setup your online lyca account with your mobile and then goto manage account-> on top right corner you can see account number and port out pin without reaching out to customer service.
Are you a Lyca Mobile rep or an employee? Because everyone here complains about them keeping your number hostage when you try to port out your number...Not a single positive comments about this company regarding the port-out process

If you download the maps to your phone, then you don't need to be connected to the internet. Of course you won't get traffic information but on the other hand the GPS and the maps in your phone will work fine.

If you have an elderly relative who just uses a cell phone for texting and voice calls, why not try TextNow? I've been using it for years as a home WiFi phone as well as on the road.

You're not following what he's saying. He's saying he uses a $30/year plan that provides calls and text. AND he uses a second esim for data, one that caters to international travelers. You can bargain shop for travel esims using the site esimdb.com. For the US, the cheapest 5GB/30days plan seems to be $3.57 and 10GB/30days is $4.84.

Also learn what you need data for. If you're just using android auto/carplay to play music, you don't need data to play your music collection; you only need data if you're using a streaming service. If you're using it for navigation, you can download the maps for the area you're in ahead of time or you can use a navigation app that downloads entire states like HERE WeGo, it'll operate like the old timey standalone GPS devices, just doesn't have traffic information.

How much total with taxes and fees?

Can you switch to another carrier once the plan ends?
Taxes are extremely low. Less than a dollar even on the $12.50 a month plan. I pay $13.13 in total a month for that plan when all taxes are factored in. Port out is easy and without any hassles, there is an account page that shows you the account number and PIN and I was able to port out to Verizon instantly without issue. Porting in was just as easy when I signed up all online.

My experience has been that while you can get port out information from the app, my port out failed, the number went into limbo, and I ultimately ended losing the number. So many times trying to speak to their customer service and that a failure, not to mention that their customer service has very limited times, only until 7:00 or 8:00 p.m. Eastern or something like that, so for someone in a different time zone further west, makes it difficult.
Thankfully it was just a spare line that I leave at home, so for seven bucks a month for the last 4 months it's not a big loss.

The $7.50 plan states "18GB data at up to 5G speeds." That sounds like they may throttle you back to LTE given that the real T-Mobile customers will have priority to 5G access. LTE is about 10X slower than 5G. Verizon thottles my data down to LTE (1-2 bars signal strength)quite often (depite me being an unlimited Verizon customer). IMO, the Hotspot capability on my Verizon phone is really useless for watching TV with LTE access.

I pay $30 for 12 months, unlimited call and text, no data. I found this plan on ebay.

Then I use traveller esim of other company, it is $6 for 5 gig or $10 for 10 gig a month. I mostly use free WiFi from home or at library or business using VPN if I am nervous.

My plans are cheaper.
Who do you use for esim data? We're only in the US for a short time per year.
