The Ryzen 5 40 is a 4-core Zen 2 processor. It has worse CPU & GPU performance than a Ryzen 3 5300U. That was the bottom of the Ryzen lineup 5 years ago.

The certified-refurbished Acer Aspire 14 226V 16GB 1TB on ebay is $443 now. 67% better CPU performance, 160% better GPU, double the RAM, 4x the storage, higher resolution & brighter display (1200p 300nit IPS), 38% larger battery, 2 year warranty.

Was it worth it?

I don't care about a backlit keyboard or touch screen and I'll never fill up a 256GB ssd.. Yes I know the TN screen isn't the greatest but it doesn't look horrible.

The Ryzen 5 40 is just a rebrand of the 7520U. Compare that to the 5300U in Passmark if you want. The 5300U wins in a host of other benchmarks (Cinebench, Geekbench single & multi, 3DMark 11, Fire Stike & Time Spy). 50% higher efficiency is absurd. They have very similar scores and load power consumption. In notebookcheck's wifi battery tests it's averaging ~6% better. This is too much analysis for a bad CPU & laptop.

That's a much better deal than this. It may not be possible to get 16GB of RAM in a $400 laptop in the future. That one also has ~60% better CPU & GPU performance, but only 2/3 of the battery life.

Yeah, I looked at the deal posted here and what looks like Best Buy's offering of the laptop you bought at Sam's and opted for the other laptop. Also, I believe BB has a 512gb HD upgrade for an additional 20 bucks on the above posted deal:
