This canned pumpkin is mainly valued as a convenient pantry staple for pies, oatmeal, and even straight-from-the-can snacking. The price is called good value, and the larger 12 pack is described as an even better deal. It also gets used for mild digestive upset in a senior dog. The main caveat is taste and sourcing, with some preferring Libbys or fresh pumpkin and questioning the China import label. A practical pick when convenience matters more than making pumpkin from scratch.
Common Questions (4)
Great Value is described as a good-value convenience option, while Libby's is preferred by some for taste and for being grown in Morton, Illinois and nearby central Illinois fields. The tradeoff is that self-prepared pumpkin can taste better, but canned pumpkin saves effort.
It works in pies, and it can also be mixed into oatmeal with cinnamon, peanut butter, and blueberries. Some people also eat it straight from the can.
The U.S. FDA allows a wide range of "golden-fleshed, sweet squash" to be labeled as "100% pumpkin," so the can may contain pumpkin or closely related winter squash rather than a single strict pumpkin variety.
It can be used for mild diarrhea in dogs, and a vet reportedly recommends it for a senior Golden. The practical use is the plain canned pumpkin, which is commonly fed in small amounts as a digestive aid.

Comparing Libby and what I roast out of Pie pumpkins from the store, there is z-e-r-o comparison. Libby tastes like watery dirt, and is pretty much garbage filler. Wonder if the actual species (?) variant of pumpkin that GV uses is different.
I often amp up the pumpkin, cut down the sugar, and grind fresh spices, for my pumpkin cheesecake, pies, lattes... I love the taste of actual pumpkin.

You're 100% right that self-prepared pumpkin will taste better but you also have to go through all that effort. Here you're paying for convenience and compromising on quality a bit.
